-“_Po|io Vaccine Urged For Adults :Under 40 â€"Minister Of Health The organization with a mem- bership of nearly 400 farmers is devoted to the conservation and improvement of crop productiv- ity, and brings to its members the most neeent information in the :field of soil and crop manage- -ment. The morning feature of this year's program was a panel _discussion on “recent hay and pasture developments." Panel ’chairman, was the well known .iarm manger. Harold Clapp, Fra- serdale \Farms, Concord. and ‘members were Roy Ormiston of Brooklin; Joe Lanthier of Thorn- ,hill, George Snider of Maple, Wm. Sutherland of Milliken. .While there was disagreement in 1some factors discussed. there was general agreement that simple . mixtures of two or three species «makes best hay-pasture mixtures. Alfalfa and brome or alfalfa and 'CiimaX' timothy were suggested mixes with some Ladino added for ‘ ‘pasture. Fail seeding, fertility re-I quirements, hay conditioners and drying equipment were discussed. Hay Conditioners were believed (to be very promising. These ma- .x,chines crimp the stems of hay, .allowing the escape of moisture and permitting stems to dry at approximately the same speed as \ leaves. The most recent machines fof this nature also act as a tedder , and leave hay in a loose flufi‘y .condition. The use of pallets for hauling bales from the field was "discussed by Mr. Lanthier. The pallets such as are used exten- sively in industry are small plat- forms -which can be lifted on a ‘threexpoint hitch loader. Each pallet is designed to carry about :20 bales and can be hauled from :the field at 15 or 20 miles per hour. i Lunch was served‘, to three “hundred persons at noon in a a remarkably fast and well organ- ‘ iized manner, and was followed immediately by the election of Directors for 1958. Guest Speakers Polio vaccine is therefore on the same free basis as diphtheria .toxoid, whooping-cough vaccine and other similar immunizing material suplied free to practis- lng physicians in Ontario. , '. Adults under 40 years of age plow constitute the more hazard- ous unprotected group. They are urged to obtain polio vaccination by arrangement with their family ‘doctor before the start of the ‘150110 season arrives in May. York County's M.0.H., Dr. Robert ‘M. King, reported to the Board of Health at its last meet- ing in 1957 that the Health Unit ihas given over 63,000‘doses of 9130110 vaccine in its pre-school, school and pre-natal immuniza- tion programme since the intro- ,duction of Salk vaccine in 1955. Salk poliomyelitis vaccine is now available free to practising .pbysicians throughout Ontario according to a reported an- noumement from the Minister of Health, Dr. Mackinnon Phil- lips. .. Three hundred and fifty York bounty farmers once again filled ,Newmarket Town Hall for the annual meeting of the county Soil & Crop Improvement As- sociation held on January 8th. The meeting was chaired ‘ by Bruce Snider, President, and W. M. Cockburn, Agricultural Rep- resentative and Secretary of the Association. Soil/ & Crop Improvement Meeting Has 85% Membership Attendance Featured speakers of the af- ternoon session were Dr. D. N. Huntley, Head of the Field Hus- bandry Department of the Onâ€" tario Agricultural College; and ‘Mr. Geo. Gear, Agricultural Rep‘ resentativejor Bruce County. Dr. Huntley gave a general reâ€" view of crop production any ur- ged farmers to make maxxmum Fuse of imprnved forage varieties. It’s the long-burning, even-burning coal that gives "clean, even heat at tremendous savings. H. JONES BUILDING SUPPLIES LTD. ANTHRACI'I'E The 1958 immunization pro- gramme begins this week in schools throughout the county to provide Salk vaccine to new starters or those otherwise in need of initial polio immunization or third doses. Sixteen special clinics to pro- vide third doses for pre-school children who received first and second doses last spring will be announced shortly by the health unit. Meanwhile. infants over 6 months of age may begin polio immunization with their family doctor or at any of the regular child health centres held by the health unit in 16 locations in York County. Information on time and place can be obtained from local health unit offices. All elementary school children and high school students totaling about 18,000 students have had the opportunity to receive at least two doses and 'almost all have received three' doses as recommended by the Provincial and Federal Health Departments. New varieties of grains such as Garry or Rodney. he stated, are purchased very promptly and come into immediate use. New varieties of clovers and grasses however, with equally as great advantages over standard var- ieties, take years before they come into full use. « The second speaker, Mr. Gear, spoke on a subject of much cur- rent interest when he delved into the field of farm mangement. In general he was optimistic about the future of farming for those: who developed a proper attitudei towards sound management prac-‘ tices. The basic fundamental of good farm management, he stated is.a proper system of keeping complete farm accounts. In im- proving farm business, the most difficult task is in accurately di- agnosing the weaknesses and strength of the resent system of management on the farm con- cerned. With complete accounts for each enterprise, the weak- nesses are discovered and the profit or loss of each is known. With this information. it is a comparatively simple matter. to suggest a common-sense treat- ment for the ailing business. Too often. said Mr. Gear, we are mis- led by our degree of interest, rather than the degree of profit, and he cited as an example, the man who produces top yields of grain whose main interest is to still further increase his grain yield, while at the same time he is feeding all of his crop produc- tion to livestock of a type or kind which is unprofitable and which without radioal change will remain unprofitable. In this ins- tance, livestock yield and not crop production could be proved ‘the weak link. [1958 Officers James Darlington of Maple was elected President for 1958 and W. M.
