St. John’s Sunday School Senior Sunday School members of St. John’s Anglican Church at- tended a Mother’s Day service in the church last Sunday morning, when the Rev. E. W4 Morley de- livered a beautifu‘ tribute to honour “her” day. The junior classes joined in special prayers for their mothers, led by Miss Grace Hobbs, Sunday school superindent. Leaping Wolf Ceremony The Goingâ€"up Ceremony from Cubs to Scouts was held Monday evening at Jefferson School with a wonderful attendance of par- ents. The ceremony got under way with the “grand howl’ by the Cubs, followed by the flag- break by the Scouts. . Skipper, Mr. E. H. Ensor, was presented with the Scout Cap badge by Mr. G. H. Saul. This badge qualifies Mr. Ensor as of- ficial scoutmaster of the Jeffer- son group. The impressive going- up ceremony of six cubs was then performed. The Cubs were taken by Akela through an avenue of ten lighted candles to meet Skip- per, and were received into the troop and patrols. The cub graduates were Wayne Havilland, Fred Waters, David Potts. Paul Dodson, John McFee and Tommy Hobsonl The investi- ture of new chums included Mi- chael Shannon, Larry Marshall, Cornelius Sommers. The newest chum is Jack Judd. The cubs honored their mothers with individual .gifts of needle cases. The presentation of the first scarf was made to David Lavender and Bobby Safruk. The evening was brought to a close by the “mouse howl", prayer and lowering of flag by Skipper En- sor. A highlight of the evening was the lovely lunch served by the Mothers’ Auxiliary. Those assisting were Mrs. McFee, Mrs. Cracknell and Mrs. Ivan Peter- sen. Riseborough and partner, Mr. B. Semple. Prize winners in the progressive were Mrs. J. Elliot and Mrs. R. Hud- ema. School News The Henderson Ave., School Concert on May 7 and 8, turned‘ out very successful both from a‘ weather and financial standpoint. The capacity crowds were an in- spiration to the young performers who put on an admirable per- formance. A net profit of approx- imately $25.00 was realized which will be used for school purposes. The staff are grateful to all par- ents who supported us so well. The parents of all children in the 5 and 6 year old groups during the year of 1958 are reminded of the registration day. at Hender- son Ave., Public School, for the children on May 28th, 930 to 11:30 and 1:30 to 3:00. Kinder- garten classes will be held in the Area in September for the first ‘time. Proof of age must be pro- ‘vided on registration day. ‘ Ladies Club The Community Ladies’ Club held its monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Clemence, on May 8th. The June meeting will take the form of a visit to the York Pioneer Museum on June 4th. Members please meet at Harbours at 6:30 pm. Final plans were made for the Euchre to be held at Thornhill School ,on May 12, and for the June Tea and Bazaar to be held at Mizen's on Wednesday, June 11th. The speaker for the even- ing was Mrs. Allison of the St. John's Ambulance Brigade. She gave a very interesting and in- formative lecture and demon. stration on artificial respiration. The Sunday school pupils excelled themselves in their scripture readings and choruses under the direction of Margaret Brodie. Sharon Rum- ble told an interesting story and Mr. Binnington spoke on A God- centred Home. On May 25, the Sabbath school will hold its an- niversary. There will be a joint service at which Miss Dickson Riley will be guest speaker. Miss Riley is widely known for her work with children. As has been the custom for several years, Headford W.A. held its annual church service on Family Day at 7.30 pm. There were visitors from Toronto. Rich- mond Hill, Unionville, Victoria Square and Queensville. Head- ford choir assisted with the music and duets were sung by tw0 lad- ies from the choir of Victoria Park United Church. Their min- ister and his wife and his mo- ther. Rev. Don Tansley, Mrs. Tansley and Mrs. Tansley Sr., were also present. Guest speaker was Dr. Margaret Arkinstall, president of the W.M.S.
