Dr. D. Gunn of the South Peel Naturalists will be enter- taining us with the new warbler recording made by Dr. W. W. H. Gunn and reproduced by means of Hi-Fi equipment. He will also show slides and talk about war- blers. Many of the songs of the warblers are in the high frequen- cy range and are interesting from this point of view. These small colourful birds are often passed by unnoticed, but with the aid of the ear they may he detegted. Warblers do befriend the hu- man race, with their small slen- der bills they poke into the crev- ises of the bark and search the blossoms and leaf buds for in- sect life. An entomologist has stated that if there were no birds, in 10 years the insect population would be so numerous as to make life for the human race impos- sible. Man has produced many insecticides only to learn that the insects became resistant to the poisons. The warblers start arriving in the first week of May. Many come from South America and start their trip leisurely at only 30 miles a day and set up their pace to more than 200 miles a day be- fore the trip is finished. They ar- rive year after year practically on thesame day; perhaps it would be more accurate to say the same night. They do migrate at night and appear in waves which are in tune with prevailing weather conditions ;that is, in the warm sector of a low pressure area moving northward. Should a cold front ap roach, the birds may be stalled or days. Some will stay here. others will push on to the Coniferous forests. To give an idea of the Warbler population. a count per 100 acres of coniferous stand in Ontario has totalled as high as 319 breeding pairs. The Richmond Hill Naturalists will welcome visitors to join them at Wrixon Hall. St. Mary’s Anglican Church at 8 pm. this May 9th to hear these fine Hi-Fi bird song recordings. » The Yearly Bird List brought up to date: The birds are listed according to first arrival date and alsa the observers name is shown.
