I §Horse Show and Fair MunigipalBoarngseryes .Deqsmn On Unlonwlle Pavmg Of Mam Street the form of a proposed new lo- cation for the road. Solicitor W. D. Thomas. representing some of the Unionville ratepayers, ques- tioned Mr. Jorgensen about the method of procedure and the cost which he felt were the only objections. He said that no one in Unionville was objecting to the improvement of the present main street. but that it was felt that the roadway was inadequate to handle the increase in traffic Next to ‘question the township engineer was Solicitor Paul Min- gay who represented the Board of Trustees of the Village of Un~ lonville. ‘ The only objection came the form of a proposed new gatign for the road. Solicitor The work for the whole project could now. be done. because of the drop in the price of some of the material. for abut $58,500 and the sewers could now be constructed for a cost of about $11,000. The amount approved by the Department of Highways for subsidy is $52,500. which is the original total cost less the estimate of the cost of the drain- age. ‘ When Mr. Jorgansen was asked why the Department of thways did nbt approve of the sewers and storm drains he said that the department felt that they are an unnecessary expense. The cost of the sewers and storm lrains would be approximately $13,000. 1600 feet of sewer would have to be installed and there would be a man-hole every 500 feet. w W “*â€" 7‘7“ ‘ V V V VVVV\WWW Wmmmmmmmmmm An afl'adavit of no individual objection to the proposed work and then an official application for the right to issue the deben- tures was presented by Mr. J. D. Lucas, solicitor for the Township of Markham. Mr. E. Jorgensen. Township Consulting Engineer gave a report of the necessary work needed to repair the street in question_ He said that the street would have to be widened. which would mean the removal of about 20 trees. the present road would have to be lowered two or three feet and storm sew- ers and drains would have to be installed. Mr. Jorgensen was then questioned by the board as to the type of‘development on the street, the other streets in the village, the size of the village, and the number of streets run- ning off Main Street. The board then asked if the project had been approved by the Depart- ment of Highways in order to receive the subsidy under the Highways Improvement Act. Mr. Jorgensen replied that he had received the approval of the De- partment of Highways for all the work except the storm sewers and drains, but after further questioning stated that he did not have it down in black and white. Mr. Kennedy replied that the application could not be ap- proved until the board received the approval of the department m writing. Sewers and Storm Drains 7i Wm, WM C.N.R. tracks and the single lane bridge at the north end of the street. The project would cost a total of $65,000 and the debentures would be paid off by the taxation of Unionville residents for six years at six and one half per cent 'which would raise the mill rate seven mills. The Ontario Municipal Board reserved decision at a public hearing held last Friday afternoon on an applicaâ€" tion by Markham Township for permission to issue $32,500 in debentures towards the cost of rebuilding the Main Street in Unionville. The hearing was held before Com- missioners Kennedy and Greenwood. The work to be done would take_in an 1_880 foot stretch of road between the 4-1"- 24 Hour Service STEEL FABRICATION. Mr. Kennedy told the township solicitor that the board could not make a decision until it received written evidence that the subsidy will be paid by the Department of Highways. Mr. R. Dukes. Chairman of the Trustees, gave an explanation of the work already done to the road south of the railway tracks. He also told the board that Mr. Jor- gensen had explained the pro- posed work to the village trustees at a public meeting last Febru: ary. Trustees E. H. Featherston- haugh told the board that he was in favour of the project. A Main St. resident, Mr. R. W. Wilson. who was a supervising inspector for the Ontario Department of Highways for 25 years. recom- mended that 12 inch drains be installed on the east side. Mr. M. Findlay. owner of the only hotel in the village felt that the new road would aid the business- men. The first three ratepayers to speak were against the expendi- ture. Mrs. K. Mackie who lives on Main St. wanted to know if water facillties had been part of the plan. It would be an unnec- essary expense to construct the ’road and then have to rip It up in the“ future to install water mains. Myrl Smith, a Main Street property owner. objected to the construction because he main- tained it would benefit ten or twelve property owners and be an undue burden to the rest of the village. Mr. E, Stiver told the board that 158 letters asking if people objected to the expend- iture had been sent out and that 66 had been returned. The let- ters stated that the people were opposed to the $65,000 proposal but not to a less expensive pro- posal. that an improvement Would bring, When Mr. Thomas suggested us- ing the original road allowance which is east of the present road. he was asked by Mr. Kennedy if this proposal had been brought before the Trustees of Unionville and had the township council turned it down. It had not been presented to either one, replied Mr. Thomas. Mr. Thomas request’ ed a description of the proposed sewers and storm drains and then questioned the necessity of this‘ wvork because of the natural ldrainage. The street is high in the centre and the water would drain to either end, he said. The main part of the objection was based on what Mr. Thomas called a poor location and too many haz- ards. He said that the road was Kmly 42 feet wide at one place‘ and ran onto a one-lane bridge at the north end of the street and that the increase in traffic would create a serious hazard. BUILDINGS cor.
