November 24, at Powell Road School. The meeting was largely devoted to a consid- eration of the needs of retarded children in our area. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell, of the Thornhill and District Association for Retarded Children. showed a film on the latest ways of handling children who do not fit into the normal public school system. Mrs. Mit- chell described the history and work of Thornhaven School. Starting in -1954 with four child- ren in a room set aside for them in Charles Howitt School, the training of retarded children then shifted to the Thornhill United Church. and finally to the pres- ent Thornhaven School, a small rented building on Bayview just south of No. 7 highway. Here three professional teachers and a number of volunteer workers care for some 30 retarded children. The lease on this building expires shortly. and a campaign is now underway to raise some $60,000 by public subscription to build a new school with facilities for 50 children. Mr. Vern Griffin, campaign chairman for the Thornhill area, described what had been accom- plished to date. and appealed for volunteers to canvass Crestwood and Steeles from Yonge to Bath- urst. Several Home and School members volunteered their sup- port. Mrs. Bradbeer announced that boards had been obtained for the Powell Road skating rink.
