Ontario, Solicitor for the Administrators, George Donneral and John Cave. EMPLOYMENT WANTED MORTGAGES DRESSMAKING POULTRY W AN TED WANTED c1w13 clw26 At this time of year_ such things as ‘Merry Christmas’ and 'Good Will Towards Men' be- come harried phrases. We have said them so many times their meaning is no longer clear. As the car rounded a bend, the headlights picked out a stooped ï¬gure at the side of the road, huddled there in the dark- ness, obviously trying to bum a lift but without even the energy to raise a thumb Ordinarily Steve would have passed the figure without giving it a second thought. He had done enough travelling to know just what sort of person thumbs a lift late at night. But tonight was different; it was Christmas Eve. He stopped the car and open- ed the door. A man of about 50 got in. He hadn’t shaved in sev- eral days; his clothes were threadbare; and his face was dir- ty. His bare hands had gone white with cold, and his lower lip trembled. Even the sparkle in his eyes had died in the dark- ness, Again the world keeps Christmas, Each home and heart alight; The faithful praise a Saviour Born one Holy night. And as you, too, keep Christmas May you fee‘. His Presence near May His, tender love surround you Through a happy day and year. A Merry Christmas to all our readers. Home From R.A.F. One year ago on Christmas Eve, a story happened that may help give more meaning to those words. It is a true story. and so far as we know. accurate. If. after having read it. you will know a little better what ‘Mer- ry Christmas' means, then it will have accomplished it’s purpose. The temperature dropped as a car sped along a highway'late on Christmas Eve. The lights of To- ronto seemed to sparkle in the night rather than glow as they usually did. A man we’ll call Steve was going home after hav- ing worked very hard that week. He was tired; he was-hungry; and he was a little in awe of what this night meant to millions of people all over the world. “How far ya goin’," said Steve, knowing full well he would get a story fabricated from lies, and probably would Mr. Trevor Varley, 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Varley, arrived at Malton airport on Wednesday morning. Mrs. Varley shed a few happy tears when she saw her son for the first time in eighteen months. Trevor had just finished two years of service in the Royal Air Force. Mr. and Mrs. Varley, Roger and Janet all took two days off from work and school to take Trevor shOpping in Toronto and to visit friends. Tre- vor especially appreciates central heating after the coolness of the English homes. We wish a speedy recovery for Mr. Zoli Berta who is ill in bed at home. Pupils and teachers are enjoy- ing the longest possible Christmas holidays this year. Mr. Charles Milsted saw two robins Friday morning, when ’the temperature moderated consider- ably. They were both chirruping cheerfully. We wonder where they found shelter in the 20° below zero on Saturday morning. Christmas Concert At all three concerts we hear excellent programmes were pre- sented. Teachers and pupils de- sen‘e a lot of credit for these fine performances. Santa visited each school. bringing plenty of presents, and treats for the pupils. The Spirit Of Christmas â€"Found On A Roadside On Wednesday evening, Decem- ber 17, a large crowd gathered at SS. 12, Markham, for the annual Christmas\ concert. Mrs. John Nigh is the teacher here. 7 6n the same night, parents and friends met at SS. 4, Markham, where Mrs. Stuart Lee is teacher. On Thursday night. December 18, the annual concert was pre- sented at SS. 7, Whitchurch. Tea- chers here are Mr. Harry Hunt. Misses Marjorie Barber and Joan Barrett. Frie'nds aré pleased to learn Mr. Jas. Doust has recovered suf- ficiently to come downstairs part time. Saw RoHins We are pleased to report Mrs. Carl Reesor came home from the Private Patients’ Pavilion, Gen- eral Hospital, Toronto. SS. 7, Markham, had a Christ- mas party for their pupils on Fri- day, the closing day of school. These pupils also report a good time. Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Hatton were guests at the wedding of their daughter in the Presbyterian Church in Scarboro on Saturday afternoon. The best wishes of the community are extended to this young couple. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Farmer left early Monday morning to spend the holiday season with relatives in Philadelphia. Mrg. Abâ€"ner Brubacher of Elora is spending several days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rees- Bishop E. J. Swalm of Duntroon had supper on Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Empringham. Mr. W. Friends and relatives were enter- tained at a.turkey dinner at noon at the Youth Centre. We’ll try to have more news of this happy oc- casion for you next week. The latest word on Mr. John Cober is that he is sufficiently recovered to come home from Newmarket Hospital in time for Christmas. “How long has it been since you've eaten?†said Steve. “Not too long." “How long?" “Two days †“Well whadya say we go get some supper? I’m hungry too." Mrs. Leonard Creelman (Judy Wilcox) was guest of honour at a miscellaneous shower on Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. C. Milsted. Judy was presented with lovely gifts from her neighbours at Old Gormley. On Tuesday afternoon Miss Marjorie Barber eqtertained Judy at 21 miscellaneous shower. Here the guests were former school pals. Miss Marjorie Barber is spend- ing most of her Christmas holi- days in New York. Especially to our older folk who are confined to home or hos- pitals. and the other people who are ill at this time, we would like to extend the Season's Greetings. Even in the rush and hurry of Christmas we would like them to know they are not forgotten. “Don't get me wrong," said Steve. “I have noone at my place to have supper with, and tonight a guy gets kind of lonely when he eats by himself. I'd ap- preciate it if you would have supper with me.†All the time he was saying these things, Steve knew there was a hot meal wait- ing for him at his home, but he couldn't help himself. Steve pulled the car around and took the next Cloverleaf in- to the outskirts of the city. When he found a cheerful looking res- taurant that was still open, he parked in front and they both went inside. When1 the waitress came for the order, the man just looked at Steve Without batâ€" ting an eye. Steve said “My friend here is just in from out of town. I want two turkey din- ners with all the trimmings: to- mato juice, cranberry sauce and plum pudding, and make sure it's the best in the house. If my friend here wants anything else, give it to him." Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Steckley and John are spending Christmas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Slaymaker, of Lancaster, Penna. Each year outside decorations and lighting effects at homes seem to be prettier. It is a pleas- ure to drive around and see this seasonal beauty. “Look Mack." said the man, “I ain't bummin nothin'. All I want is a ride. That way I don't owe you no_thin’ when you let me out." “Well . . :okay. but unnerstan' I ain’t askin’ ya to do this," said the man. Gormley Home and School As- sociation held its annual Child- ren's Night Friday, December 12th, and a record turnout of 104 parents and children enjoyed the gala event. As a pleasant sur- prise Sheila Henderson accom- panied the group on its opening number “0 Canada". A very warm welcome was extended to one and all. Mr. George DeWitt of Richmond Hill was present with a group of ï¬lms â€" the ever beautiful “Silent Night", “Alias Saint Nick", always loved by the children, “A Christmas Carol" â€"the story of old Scrooge. and finally the funny little “Calico Dragon." Several members renewed their membership and it was thought to be a good start for the New Year coming. ya mister, but ,I haven't got any mogey to payâ€" ya back." “Ldok,†‘sa’id’ Steve, “I invited you to have supper with me, I dldryt invite you to pay for it.†“Say, do yé know‘vihere the police station is around here?" In surprise Jim said “Sure .I know. It‘s just up the street. but why do you want to know?" Steve said, “Look. I've got something to do. You stay right here and start to eat. I'll be back in a minute.†He left the restaurant, and saw a men's clo- thing store across the street just closing for the night. HeAburst in the door and told the startled salesman he wanted a pair of men‘s gloves and a good warm scarf. With the two parcels un- der his arm. he returned to the vagrant in the restaurant and sat down. "Well," said the man, “It's too late for me to try to get home tonight, an' I don't have any money, so if they see me walkln' around the streets, they'll lock me up for vagrancy. I figger if I go to them first. they'll let me sleep in a cell tonight, an' at least I'll be warm an' dry." “Thanks mister, thanks. And a Merry Christmas to ya’." With that, the man disappeared off up the dark street. teve knew he. would never see this man again. He knew the gloves and scarf would prob- ably be sold or pawned. He knew he had spent all but a dollar and a half of his own hard earned money on a complete stranger. But as he drove home through the light snow that had begun to fall, his heart felt warm. It was a funny feeling; one he had nev- er experienced before, but some- how he knew lt was a ‘rlght’ kind of feeling. He though to himself, ‘I guess I've been a fool. I haven’t got much in this world, but that poor guy had even less. Maybe someday he’ll do the same thing for someone else.’ "Here." said Steve. “Here's somethin‘ for you for Christmas. It‘s not very much because I'm not a millionaire. The gloves will keep your hands warm, and the scarf will keep your neck warm in the wind. And here’s two dollars. I’d like to make it more. but that's all I can spare. May- be that’ll get you a hotel room for the night. At least you can’t be arrested as a vagrant if you have money in your pocket." The man looked up in sure prise. He had nearly finished the meal. He said nothing. but tears welled up in his eyes and his hands shook as he took the small gifts. He opened hls mouth to say something, and Steve spoke first: ‘Better hurry up on that turkey. The plum pudding is on its way." When the meal was over, Steve bought the man two pac- kages of cigarettes and handed them to him as he went out the And as He drove. Sféve'loaigga at the stars.
