I landed there in somewhat of a hurry one day, when the 'plane I was in made a crash landing.†The two men started reminiscing and" finally Les said, “Say, I remember that. Nearly scared the wits out of my wife and kiddies. you did, landing like that and the plane going up in flames â€"- How many of you survived." he asked softly. Bud Cable told him three of the crew died in the fire, and the R.C.A.F. observer died three days later in hospital as the result of burns . . . As with every story such as this one, there is always a hero, and like most heroes this one has stayed hidden in the back- ground. until last week‘s accident- al meeting took place. The other day Bud Cable, Rich- mond Hill assessor. was talking across the counter in the munic- ipal offices to one of the town's taxpayers. Leslie Sargeant. when Bud said. “You'v: got rather a broad English accent, Mr. Sar- geant, just where do you hail from?" to which Les Sargeant replied “Manchester.†‘ “a: We went back to the beginning of it all â€" when Bud Cable, for- merly a young man with a private pilot‘s license, decided to enlist in the airforce as an L.A.C. in the year 1940. It was when he had received the promotion of Flight Sergeant of No. 12 Squadron, and had done 10 or 12 operational trips, Flt. Sgt. Cable met an officer in the W.A.F. who had in her pOSsession an Egyptian stone or amulet, said to bring the wearer good luck. Shortly after this encounter Bud was called in to be briefed on We asked Bud Cable to let us have the whole story of that fate- ful trip. which ended in the nast- iest of three crashes Bud exper- ienced during the war. By Mona Robertson This is the story about two men. Two men who shared 1‘ un- forgettable experience during World War II -â€" yet who never met. really. until one day last w;ek in Richmond Hill. a new flight â€" with a crew of new men (all green to the job) â€" and he was to go along for the trip as rear gunner. “At this time.†Bud told us, “we were down to the 10% sur- vival rate. and I was not too hap- py about my assignment. But you don't say anything about your feelings, you just go along with the commands.†Obviously per- turbed about the whole thing, however. he sought out the young WAAF and said, “Mind if I hold that stone of yours, and make a wish? I’ve got a stint coming up I’m a bit leery about." The young woman looked at him and said, as she handed over the stone which was hanging from a metalochain. “Here, take it with you for luck." Bud told her she’d better keep it, since she might not see it again other- wise. but she insisted he take it. realizing perhaps he needed a moral-booster. Bud tucked it in to his tunic pocket and reported for duty. “Over Cologne we ran into me- dium to heavy flack.†Bud recalls, “it felt as if we had been hit and some flack had lodged in the port side motor. On the way back to England the motor developed condensation and I could see a stream of smoke and I knew there was something wrong." Going in- to the forward part of the ’plane, where. the boys were having a singâ€"song, (happy to be on their way home). Bud told the pilot he had better “feather the prop" and try to find an emergency land- ing field, “they were in for trouble." He went back to 'the rear of the plane and turned his turret â€" thus the escape door Was turned away from the motor of the ‘plane. Next thing he recalls is that the ’plane landed with a crash and he had been thrown out onto the ground, where he sat in a dazed condition watching the head of the turret burning from the fire in the motor. He realized something had to be done quickly if any of the boys inside wer to be saved and dashed in to the burning ’plane to try and get at least one of the lads out. He says now that he remembers a man. a woman and a parcel of kids running across the field â€" the man, of course. was Leslie Sargeant and his wife, with their children. The ’plane had landed near a balloon centre outside of Manchester. close to the Sarg- eants’ home â€"â€" after hitting a high tension wire and cutting off the power in the surrounding area. THE BAFFLES 5(2)}! Jaw/2y C/zamn lead/[y aue unner Bud Cable was born in Barrie. Ontario where he attended school. He has the typical Can- adian inquisitiveness and search- ing interest. since he has spent two years at the Toronto Chiro- practic College with Dr. Arthur G. Broad and Dr. H. D. Melsness; attended a business college and worked for the TTC. After com- ing out of the air-force. Bud mar- ried Kay Wark, a Richvale girl and tried his luck at selling real estate. Finally he went into the assessment field, working in the assessment department of Mark- ham Twp. until taking on the position of assessor for Richmond Hill in 1958. Help arrived from the centre. and Bud and the young flyer he had been trying to save were rushed off to hospital. A few days later. a little r'irl came to see him in hospital and brought him three pounds. eight shillings, which had been collected for the ‘hero’ "in recognition his brav- ery.†He was very touched but could only say. “I'm only happy any of us came out of it alive." Ten days later Bud was back 0 duty. where he eventually beâ€" came Squadron Adjutant. then Flight Lieutenant. He is still at- tached to the RCAF reserves and once a ye! goes down to Toron- to to recruit men for the airforce. Bud Cable says, “Assessment is really the best job of them all. I enjoy meeting people and doing assessment work. The public is 99 and three‘quarters per cent ter- rific to deal with, providing they understand the assessment pic- ture." and explaining the assess- ment is just what Bud Cable en- joys doing most. ,.4. “What happened to the lucky stone?" we asked. Bud told us it was returned with thanks â€" but the identification bracelet he wore around his wrist was turn- ed from silver to black. “prob- ably from the high tension wire we touched." Bud thinks.
