Jarvis as chair-lady. The Scripture Lesson was read by Mrs. C. Story. The Lesson Thoughts were taken by Mrs. Alan Chadwick. Mrs. Jack Rumney was soloist, and was ac- companied at the piano by Mrs. Jim Barker. Mrs. A. F. Binning- ton introduced the guest speaker, who was Mr. D .C. Read of the John Howard Society. Toronto. He outlined the work his society does. Mrs. L. Mumberson took charge of the business portion. On Tuesday evening of last week over fifty neighbours and fiends gathered in the Victoria Square Community Hall for a miscellaneous shower in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Barber, J“, (Patricia Buckland) who were married recently. Many beauti- ful and useful gifts were received by the happy couple. Harry and his bride thanked everyone for their gifts and the kindnesses shown them. Refreshments were served at the close, and everyone left wishing the happy couple many long years of married life together. W.A. Luncheon The March group of the W.A. held a St. Patrick’s Luncheon in the Sunday School room on Wed- nesday of last week, to which the ladies and pre-school children in the community attended. The tables were beautifully decorated in the St. Patrick mo- tifs with centrepieces of bowls of chrysanthemums. Having taken off my see-into-the-fiuture glasses I begin to wonder how much of all this might ever come to pass! And the latest bulletin from the town office is that the blueprints for an administration centre have been approved. With a ring of curving four-storey and three- storey buildings forming three quarters of a circle ar- ound a landscaped area (the psycho-therapy committee have become very much aware of the importance to mental health of greensward) and the low entrance hall forming a fourth quarter, Richmond Hill will have one of the most modern town circles in Ontario. Besides our usual offices of hydro. water, police, information, and so forth the more modern committees will also be housed there. I have mentioned some of them, and while it has not been officially announced as such, I for one see the writing on the wall as these committees take over the real functions of town government. The Yonge Street Shopping Plaza, now that the through highway is detoured in a sweeping curve ar« ound the outskirts of the town has followed the most psychologically proved plans in order to satisfy the urge of keeping up with the times that has made itself felt in the past decade (really since 1965). With gracious lawn, flowers and trees blanketting the subterranean car park for our most-modern shopping area, and with escalators and moving sidewalks to encourage custom- ers to do ALL their shopping in that one area, the now dated, but once proud plazas of the late fifties are also planning a complete remodelling which will be even more up-to-date. (Continued from Page 2) One of the older sections, which became so terribly outmoded that by 1972 the aesthetic planning commit< tee condemned it, was developed as a series of garden apartments where fifty families in each unit came to appreciate the artificial ice arena, the heated swimming pool, the recreation hall which the town health com- mittee insisted be incorporated into each unit as one measure to create more family play space where the generations could take their recreation together and which proved one factor in successfuly combatting the delinquency peak of the 1950-60 period. Our town hospital as one of the newer buildings is quite the showpiece, incorporating as it does all the newest facilities 'not only in its operating theatre but also in the home-like atmosphere of each patient’s room. Camping for crippled children is fun out-doors and in-doors. At the five crippled children’s camps in Ontario. which are owned and operated by the Ontario Society for Crippled Children, the boys and girls always take back home some article they have made in their arts and crafts class. B.D., of the Rich- mond Hill United Church. Spec- ial music. Church N ews People are prone to think of sickness rather than of health. hence it is easier to have more hospitals built for sic}; people than to realize one need not be sick at all. If life is not longer and healthier it is largely the result of the apathy of the average citizen. who too fre- quently remains supremely indifferent to the everyday problems of personal or com- munity health.
