FranCis motored to Severn Bridge where they joined the Ernie Duries to celebrate Mrs. Durie’s birthday. Richvale Chapel Winners of the Sunday School contest held at the Richvale Cha- pel Sunday School were announ- ced on Sunday morning. The first prize of ten days at Joy Bible Camp, Bancroft. was awarded to Donald Wickson with 57 points, and to Sharon Bailey with 36 points. The second prize of a camera went to Gary King with 31 points and to Charlene Rayson with 22 points. Third prize was a Bible which was won by John Waller with 24 pomts. and a white Bible was won by Brenda McCarthy. The prizes were presented by retiring Superintendent Mr. Douglas Price. As a result of the contest there are 27 new girls and thirty boys. Miss G. The children were divided in- to two groups. each being taken on a tour of the forest by Mr. W. 'T. Managahan, of the Department of Lands and Forests, who gave the history of the Vivian Forest and its connection with York County Council. Mr. Managahan explained the different types of trees in the forest and those which the pupils planted during the day. While one group was touring the other was transplant- ing. Each of the children was pres- ented with a seedling to be plant- ed in the home school yard. The children from School Area No. 1 Markham and Vaughan were ac- companied by the Supervismg Principal. Mr. E. J. Sand. Those attending from Richvaie Public School were Janet Taylor, Lynn Elliott, Mickey McLennan and Peter Miller. Those from Ross Doan were Jeanette Mac- Donald. Valerie Ewart, Graham Brown and Bobby Grainger. Those Irom Charles Howitt were Shirley Gordon, Wendy Smith, David Mitchell and Alan Auxiliary for Guides and Brown- ies met at the home of Mrs. L. J. Rootham on Wednesday, May 6. There were about 25 ladies present and they discussed the coming weekâ€"end at Camp Samac for Guides. The coming rally and the safe arrival of their little'the mother and daughter banquet daughter, a sister for Brian Bar- ney, on May 4. Tree Planting , On Thursday Richvale Ross Doan and Charles Howitt Schools were among those who sent senior students to Vivian Forest for a history-making event. 10,000 white and red pines were planted by children representing the pub- lic schools in York County. In Hospital Jean Buffet, Roosevelt Dr., has been in the hospital for two weeks encased in a cast from neck to ankles, to help prevent cuiyature of the spine, in a few weeks the cast will be removed and surgery will be done and then 12 yearbld Jean will remain in hospital a few more weeks before return- ing home. Her many little friends wish her a speedy recovery and hope she doesn’t run out of books to read as reading is her pet hobby. Birthday Wishes Bobby Boulden, Westwood Lane, celebrated his twelfth birthday on Saturday. May 9. He entertained his friends Jim Per- bowling. Camp Week-end The 2nd Richvale Guides and leaders, Capt. Wanda Weir, Lieut. Eileen Pick, Mrs. J. Kirk, Mrs. H. Jarman and Rae Gottschalk en- ‘ joyed a very successful week-end at Camp Samac. Mrs. H. Martin and Mrs. W. Baker went along as cooks. They left Friday night and returned on Sunday evening, afâ€" ter having lots of outdoor activ- ity in the grand sunshine every- one had a glowing complexion. The Guides were busy working on their badges in the daytime and entertaining and being entertain- ed in the evenings. Lots of fun was had by all who attended. Guest Speaker Mrs. W. Ellis, Westwood Lane. president of lst Langstafi Moth- ers Auxiliary and vice-president of York Summit area was the guest speaker at 5th Richmond Hill Scouts and Cubs mothers’ auxiliary on Wednesday, May 6. Mrs. Kerslake, president and Mrs. Chandler, program conven- or, welcomed Mrs. Ellis, who spoke on the "Purposes of Mo- thers’ Auxiliaries and Scouting." Charles Howitt Recreation Assoc. The baseball season is again upon us and in keeping with the season the Charles Howitt Recre- ation Association has been busy enrolling the boys of the area. On Monday, May 11, and Wednesday, May 13, teams are to be formed with the games starting the fol- lowing week. Monday and Wed- .- nesday are the nights for baseball this year. Joint Concert of Area Schools T,S.A. No. 1 Markham and Vaughan are presenting an even- ing of music and art, on Friday, May 22. at 7.30 in the auditorium of the Thornhill High School. Under the direction of Mrs. K. Elliott. supervisor of art for the area and Mr. Hugh Martin, music supervisor for the area, this will be the first joint concert of area schools. Besides the individual repres- entative grade choirs there will be a combined intermediate school finale, sung by the inter- mediate grades of the north schools, Ross Doan, Richvale, Charles Howitt and Carrville. The combined senior finale will be sung by senior grades from the south schools, Henderson, Langston, Thornhill and Thorn- ea. Tickets will be available from the pupils of these schools and with the 800 capacity of the au- ditorium it would seem advisable to procure your ticket early so that you will not be disappointed. lst Langstaff Scouts At the regular meeting of the Scouts on Thursday, May 7, at the "barn", the Scouts were pleased to welcome Mr. Brian Connett, a scoutmaster from To- ronto, who took over the meeting and made it a memorable night for those present.
