_ One of the greatest tasks confront- ing the nation at this time is the main- tenance of national health. One of the most serious of diseases and at the same time one of the most readily cur- able when found in its early stages, is tuberculosis. ' - It is to the credit of the Richmond Hill and Thornhill Lions Clubs and those who buy Christmas seals from Nation- al Sanitarium Association that every resident in the district, may take pre- cautionary steps against this insidious disease by having a free test for TB within the next few days. It is pbssible, of course, that a great many motorists and a. great many pe- In 1958, almost one hundred Cana- dians were reprieved. .In 1957,. there had been 3,579 trafâ€" fic deaths and, by the usual trend of such things, it could be expected that in 1958, the mortality figures would be still higher. But, something happened; the death list dropped by approximately one hundred. Perhaps more than a hun- dred men, women and children spent more time in their homes than on the highways; perhaps many more were travelling in foreign parts for long per- iodsduring that year. Or perhaps some ware carrying potent rabbits’ feet or goodluek pieges. Until apparatus using miniature film was developed, mass surveys, now broadened to include tuberculin tests were impractical and costly. Chest clinics had to be confined to known and suspected cases. As a result not more than one in five persons suffering from LB. Now this dangerous situation can be remedied. Found in its early stages, and properly treated at once tuberculosis can be cured and the possibility of passing it to others overcome. More persons in Ontario die from tuberculosis than from all other infec- tious diseases combined. This is large- ly because an infected person may go on for some time not at all aware that he has the disease. destrians suddenly decided to drive safely and to walk with common sense, regardless of what the pessimist may think. 7. Whatever the reason for this hope- ful turn, let’s make it a regular trend â€"- bring those mortality figures down and down. Any one of us can be attacked by this disease and at any time. The old belief that those over 30 are no longer susceptible is entirely without founda« tion. Helping in the task of destroying this enemy of man is a duty that be- longs to us all. The surest way of doing so is by having a tuberculin test and also chest X-ray if indicated. Whatever the reason for that drop in the number of dead, somethingmust have happened â€"â€" D.B.S. figures don’t lie; it must be that the Canadian citi- zen is becoming more traffic conscious. The right lane has a parked car every fifty feet and the line of cars in the left lane stops be< hind the man who wants to make a left hand turn! See it every Thursday or Friday evening travelling south through Willowdale past the shopping plaza. Why do cars use the Elgin Mills Side Road East? Well they use it to go eastwards because there's no sign to say BAD ROAD Use At Your Own Risk. As a matter of fact, you can plunge into a positive chasm that isn't even marked with a BUMP flag, as well as all sorts of old fashioned washboard sections and minor rocky mountain ranges to make the mile and a quarter sector to Bayview from Yonge into a ride that will challenge any at the Ex â€" and you don’t have to buy a ticket either. Perhaps we could persuade someone (either someone with taking ways, or someone in authority) to find some of the left-over-fromâ€"the-spring-troubles signs of the Bad Road . . . Risk variety or the cute little red ones that say BUMP and do a good coverage along that piece of roadway. anywhere in the district {tom 12 noon to midnight. When do we get the liquor store and the brewers’ retail outlet that we voted for a year ago? Well now, one of them, on the corner of Crosby Av- enue and Yonge Street is coming along right smartly. For quite a time back the earth was scuffed about and men in trench coats and their hands in their pockets stood gazing at the expanse of shattered earth; they were looking positively woebegone, but they put in little wooden markers and now, lo and behold! the concrete block has risen out of the ground â€" so that in no time at all we won’t have to make sudden forays to Willow- dale when a light wine is needed for our dinner table. If money grew on trees Richmond Hill Would have had its swimming 001, its tennis courts, its super arena. For that matter, if money grew on trees every home would have its air conditioning unit instead of a mort- gage. ' ' But for the first time since the town began to expand lawns can be kept green, for there are no watering restrictions in spite of the prolonged dry spell. The new-dugr well is living up to its publicity. - And the trim-up ob on the arena looks pretty good. The library is something we can point to with pride for years to come. . Our streets and their lighting are pretty good too. My taxes were raised only an amount equal'to my entire 1949 tax bill after all! What extra things have we got with this year’s in- crease in taxes?
