Since 1936 Tom has drive all over Ontario and into parts of Quebec. Now he is sent mostâ€" 1y on short runs between Toron- to and Woodstock with hours reg- ular enough that he can spend time with his family. and enjoy his hobbies of golf. bowling, ‘trailering’ and camping. This November_ the zlst and 23rd to be exact, Tom will com~ pete again in the National Finals of the Dominion truck roadeo at the Automotive building in the ONE. grounds, Toronto. He just has the one competition â€" no more preliminaries â€" to defend his title of National Champion, which he won last year. Three times a winner for the Ontario Truck Roadeo and a sec- ond prize winner once for the National, “because I didn't blow my horn at i. stop light" (he lost 10 points for that error). Tom told us, in answer to our question. that the highest number of points attainable is 400. In the last con- test he tried for. the Ontario Roadeo. in February of this year, Tom chalked up 356 points. We queried further about this point system and were told 310 points are available in the field roadeo. while another 90 points are attainable in a prior examin- ation held at the Fort York Ar- mories. And how are these points dis- tributed? Well here's how it goes: Appearance 10; Driving Rules 30; Industry 10; First Aid 10; Fire fighting 15 and Equipment de- fects 15. Field tests include: Ser- pentine 50', Offset alley 50; Straight line 50: Parallel park 50; Alley dock 50; and Clearance and stop 60. Willowdale (Try testing your own driving skill some time â€"â€" you may not win a trucking-oscar, but you could put back that original pol- ish and extra safety care in your driving by following through with the above tests). One of the popular TV shown (as far as boys around six to 10 are concerned) is about two truck 1 drivers and their 'narrow escapes’ each week . . . it’s too colourful Tom said, after we had asked, “just how exciting in truck driv- ‘ing”. The National winner said. “there's nothing unusual to re- port" . . . And, about the worst thing that ever happened to him while driving his truck took place several years ago. At that time he was driving a full load of per- oxide on the highway, when a tie rod on his truck broke and ditched him. All the racks on one side of the truck, and all the bot- tles of peroxide, fell out, but not one bottle was broken. Tom said after the truck was repaired and reloaded he continued on and made his delivery. m,,,. s“: 1.1.. The National Truck Roadeo of which the Ontario Roadeo is just one part. began 12 years ago. Approximately 100 drivers take part in the Ontario with four to five thousand people watching their efforts, then after elimina- tion (a trucking company can have as many as three drivers participating in different events). one truck driver for the whole province is chosen to go on to the finals for the national awards. The same preliminaries are ta- king place in the other Dominion provinces with one finalist per province finallv selected. Tom says it is a good thing for all truck drivers to take part in these roadeos, “it makes one more traffic and safety conscious". We asked if he had any tipl tucked away, for just common, everyday varieties of drivers â€"- he laughed and said, "Obey the rules, as laid down in the Ontario driving manual". Pat, who attends Richmond Hill High School, and their seven year old son, Gary, who attends Concord Public Schoolz In a fear weeks Tom and his wife, the former Bertha Wallace of Woodbridge. are planning a ‘busman’s holiday" â€" they leave for a trailer trip to the states with their 15 year old daughter And we think it's safe to wag- er that Mrs. Roach is no back seat driver -â€" with her husband, Tom, at the wheel of the family ENCORE ME. 5-1000 Richmond Hill I
