PATTERNS .- ............................ 25c Trees On Street Line Doomedâ€"Blame Progress A deputation headed by Mr. Brown, regarding watermains, ï¬ll- ed ditches, dying trees and road widening waited on Markham Township Council at its meeting this week and discussed with the council and Township Engineer Davis the pipe-laying project be- ing carried out in that arena The ratepayers asked “Why is it necessary in ditching to lay pipes so far from the shoulders of the road that trees are either removed or damaged?†They also complained that bulldozers were ï¬lling the culverts with loose earth. Mr. Davis explained that road allowances were so narrow bull- dozers had to ‘make’ shoulders in order to operate. Also, the pipe was laid 16 feet from the north street line on Elgin Street, be- cause at present the road is only 30 feet wide. He predicted the street would be 66 feet wide in the very near future. "We are preparing for that now, this is the reason why the watermain is in that position." Markham Township Dying trees were discussed by the delegates, council and the engineer . . . it is a squectï¬ha’; is 'being discussed throughout the province. And it is declared another mark of “progressâ€. 7 Apparently trees, which have grown through the years too close to the road line, will. if they are not removed when widening pro- ceeds â€" just plain give up and die. For in widening roads, ï¬ll is' of necessity placed ï¬ve or six feet above their roots, the roots then cannot breathe and the tree gradually withers, suffers dry rot, and dies. The ratepayers, particularly Miss Holman, asked council to consider a tree-planting campaign to replace trees that could not be removed safely but had to be cut down, or torn out by bulldozers. Correspondence A letter from Mrs. E. M. Mou- ser was dealt with by council ver- bally. anfl the clerk was instruct- ed to iQform her that, “At a PATTERN No. 492 CURLING Sixes 14-18 per 4 oz. skein Richmond Hill | TU. 4-1492 $1.00 each meeting with the C.N.R. last Thursday an overpass on Hen- derson Avenue was discussed â€" and the engineers are trying to work out a solution with town- ship engineers." Mrs. Mouser had requested that council take immediate action to declare a through north-south street estab- lished before the railway goes ghlrlough at Dudley Street, Tham- l . T.T.C. Statement The third quarterly statement from the T.T.C. reported Mark- ham Township’s share was in the amount of $3,058.52. Police Report The Police Department report for October showed 469 calls made, including 21 accidents in- vestigated, 9 cases of theft, 9 warrants of commitment execu- ted and 10 dog complaints. There were no missing persons and no fatalities. Total cost of operat- ing the township cruisers for the month (including 4 new tires) was $365.63. Ed. Victoria Square Lions Make Plans For Ladies Night On the occasion of the first Ladies Night of the Victoria Square Lions Club which will be held on November 17th, Mr. Paul Delmer of The Liberal staff will be the guest speaker. His recent visit to the Soviet Union will form the topic of his speech, which should prove of great in- terest to members and their wives. The Lions are hoping to re- vive an old English custom with some out-door Christmas carol- ling in the Victoria Square disâ€" trict. They anticipate performing at various focal points in the area. on one or more evenings during the Christmas season, and a collection will be taken for welfare work. Richmond Hill citizens who take a pride in making our home town attractive must be incensed to see a huge billboard erected opposite our Municipal Building. We have been proud of this building and have watched with pleasure the development of lawn, shrubs and a recent boundary hedge. Our Council is to be con- gratulated on its efforts to make this building and its surroundings beautiful. Can there be any possible rea- son for an unsightly billboard at this spot, or anywhere in the town?
