Fortunately no one was in the building when the roof fell around three Satur- day morning.' Father John Brennan told “The Liberal" the building was insured for $9,000 fire protection and if the present loss is covered, the congregation would have their new building fund boosted. Seeking $35,000 for a new church to accommodate a grow- ing parish, the‘ congregation pled- ged last fall $36,000 to be paid over a three year period. The fund actually has $4,000 now. The white-framed one-roamed building was built about 30 years ago by Schomberg residents. be- fore the Catholic Settlement was started. No services are“ being missed, in spite of the building’s loss Weekday mass is observed as usual at the convent, administer- ed by Father Brennan and Father O’Neill. Sunday masses are being held in the school basement, where the altar and pews were transferred. Collapse of the roof of Sacred Heart Church, in King Town- ship’s Catholic Settlement, Fifth Concession Line, may prove a “blessing in disguise". They would be trained in such a way that they would live up to their motto of “Be Prepared.” Of course, his wife, Lady Baden- Powell, became the first World Chief of Guides. In 1912, Guides were organized in Canada under Lady Pelletvas first Chief Com- missioner - a post she held for 9 years. In the same year. the Can- adian Guide headquarters were established in Toronto. After fifty years. the standards of Guiding are just as high as they originally were, or even higher. The uniform however, has changed with the rest of the fashion world. from a long-skirt- ed monstrosity to a modern-day uniform that enables today‘s Guides to move more freely. It makes our mothers’ old camp uniforms seem out-dated This new recording will com- prise a selection of songs of fin- ches of Eastern and Central North America. This is the sixth recording to be released by Dr. Gunn, and each one has added prestige to his position of not only Canada’s eminent nature recording artist, but as one of the most outstand- ing men in his field. Barbara Lowens 4th Richmond Hill Guides This year Guiding celebrates its fiftieth birthday. Guiders from all over Ontario and out- standing Guides and Brownies met at Eaton auditorium in To- ronto two weeks ago and a large- scale play was presented. Guides are a decidedly hard- working and conscientious group. The many things that they must learn for tenderfoot, second class and first class tests help to in- crease their general knowledge, strengthen character, sharpen a1- ertness and stimulate the think- ing powers of a Guide‘s mind. Each girl also has a wide choice of extra or proficiency badges that she may try to earn. World premiere of a new nature recording by Dr. William W. H. Gunn will take place at Richmond Hill, February 20th. In se- cond and first class Guide Tests. four important ways are stressed; (1) Intelligence, (2) Handicraft. (3) Health, (4) Service. Under Intelligence, you would find such items as playing stalking games, accident awareness, how and where to summon a doctor, po- licz and fire aid, use the com- pass and find 16 points, find points by the sun and stars, or- ganize, and take two Guides un- der first class on a half day hike, cooking one meal out-doors. Handicraft deals with knots, fire- making, darning, cutting out and sewing together, a’ simple gar- ment. Health stresses the need for cleanliness, proper rest, ab- ility to swim, float, know water safety precautions and how to perform the Halger Neilson me- thod of artificial respiration. Ser- vice deals with community know- ledge. so you would be able to direct a stranger to a certain place correctly. Hill, February 19th, 20th and let, is expected to attract over 500 or- nithologists, biologists, conser- vationists, and just plain amateur rockhounds and birders to the An- nual Meeting. Films, speakers, and field outings will contribute to the delegates crowded schedule who will represent 43 Naturalist Clubs throughout Ontario. Dr. Gunn‘s recording, “Fin- ches” will be on sale through the F.O.N. and retail outlets shortly after the Convention. - prejudices of race or creed. Ev- eryone is a sister to every other Guide, whether Chinese. Japan’ ese, D'utch, Negro or Jew. An- other interesting thing is that all denominations meet together, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, etc. These girls must pass through three levels or classes as men- tioned before, bginning with the Tenderfoot Guide promising the pledge that is the foundation of the_whole organization. “I promiseion my honour, to do my best, To do my duty to God and the Queen, To help other people at all times, portant extensive auction sale of 30 head high grade Holsteins. blood tested and vaccinated, 2 Massey Ferguson 10’ self propell- ed combines. near new. late mod- els No. 44M-H.
