February 29. members of the University Wo- men’s Club of York County were privileged to have as their guest speaker the fascinating Miss Jane Mallet. well-known actress of radio, television and the thea- ire. The talented Miss Mallett. who has had wide experience in all three media. confined her re- marks chiefly to a description of how a television show is produc- ed. She expressed nothing but the deepest admiration for the very large number of highly skilled individuals who work be- hind-the-scene miracles to pres- ent viewers with a smooth-runâ€" ning T. V. drama. The some- what technical subject did not suppress the actress‘s own inim- itable humour. which revealed it- self many times as shc related some personal experience or desâ€" cribed the various hazards en- countered by a television per- former. with swinging micro- phone booms. scenery in lnotion, falling props alld endless lengths of cable. In introducing Miss Mallett. Mrs. Carol Davis of King re- ferred to her talents not only as a comedian but as a dramatic ac- tress as well. This was evidenced by her performance in the role of Julia in a recent T. V. produc- tion of “The Cocktail Party.” She has been the star of eight “Spring Thaws.” was the moving spirit of the revue. “Fine Fren- zy." was on the first television show when.T. V. began in Can- ada. alld has had roles in many G. M. Theatre productions on television. Miss Mallett. does a great deal to encourage young actors and is interested in the whole acting profession. She is President of and moving spirit behind the Ac- tors‘ Fund. as well as a member of the Councils of Actors‘ Equity and the Association of Canadian Radio alld Television Artists. Miss Mallett became serious In discussing her work with these organizations and the plight of performers in the Calladian thea- tre to-day. Progress has been made but much more must be done to protect the artist alld give llime some security. In re- lating some of the difficulties en- countered in the development of Canadian theatre. she deplored the tendency of newspapers to devote pages of favorable cover- age to sports events and sports figures. while little. alld often critical. coverage is given the theatre and- its performers. Miss Mallett commented on the tremendous stimulus which the recent visit of Dame Edith Evans had been to Toronto artists. She cited this in cbrrecting an lm- pression left by recent newspa- per reports that members of ACTRA had voiced opposition to actors being imported from the United States for special perfor- mances. Miss Mallett pointed out that their objection was not to C. B. Boynton 'Fairs Pres. At the annual convention of the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies last week in Toronto, C. B. Boyn- ton of Thornllill was elected President of the Class A & B Fairs Association_ A past president of Markham Fair, Mr. Boynton has for several years. been the livestock dir- ector of that show and be- cause of his year round en- tilusiastic work for the fair, his fellow directors have christened him “Mr. Mark- ham Fair". For many years. he was a breeder and exhib- tor of purebred Tamsworth swine and acts as judge of swine at many fairs. What's That ?
