Spring Cleaning at Come and Browse Stud/go AND NOVELTIES (By Mrs. R. Stuart) “The Farm Organization Story in College” was the topic dis- cussed by Ontario Forums last week and while the title included colleges in general, some groups confined theii discussion to Ag- ricultural Colleges. The Edgeley Farm Forum, meeting at the home of Mrs. Harry Jackson con- sidered these two questions pos- ed for the forums to answer. 1. Many people feel that college Since no ticket sales are made at the C. P. R. Locust Hill Sta- tion, Council approved the C.P.R.’s decision to hire a care- taker only, and not an agent. De- puty-reeve Wilfred Dean said, I thought they were going to deâ€" velop these lines as commuter services? To which Councillor Lawson Mumberson replied, “This is C.P.R." Five persons residing on the east side of the 7th Line Mark- ham Township have protested to council stating they are strongly against the establish- ment of a new cemetery there. Council left its reply over until next week when a representative of the Toronto Cemetery Board will meet with them. Reeve Clark said he doubled if that section qualified for a 30 mile per hour speed but aaid their request would be turned over to the County Roads depart- ment. Council agreed to support 48 Doncaster area ratepayer: repres- ented by Mr. H. D. Laurie, wno wrote stating they would ask County Council for a crosswalk on Bayiew at Steeles and a 30 m.p.h. speed limit in the area. for the safety of school children crossing at that point. 'Robb who is resigning from the Court of Re- vision owing to health reasons Wide Variety Of Easter Cards The Markham Township Build- Wér/zllam .7“! .9. DRY 10c naturally Opinion was quite divided con- cerning the knowledge that col- lege graduates have about the function of farm organizations. Those forums who considered ag- riculture college graduates main- ly, felt they had some, if not adequate understanding, while others felt it depended on the background of the individual graduate. Those with farm back- grounds would have some know- ledge of the functions of farm organizations .vhether they were agricultural graduates or any other. More groups. including the Edgeley group ,said it was not true that College graduates had no understanding than believed this statement. However, the ma- jority did not commit themselves one way or the other. They felt seine grziduates â€" even most had no understanding of the func- tions of farm organizations, or that most ha" little understand- ing, but almost all forums agreed that a lack of this knowledge was a serious handicap for those graduates who were working with farm people. Said the Edge- ley Forum members “It would be a handicap if the graduates didn’t understand farm agricul- tural functions.” And they also added that they thought college graduates working in agricul- ture should be able to obtain short courses in farm organiza- tion policy. The Ontario For- ums were nearly unanimous in this feeling. Opinion was about equally di- vided between those groups who felt this type of course should be included in the regular college curriculum or as a short course during the college education and those who thought it should be taken after graduation, those who felt it didn’t matter whe- ther it was taken during or after, and those who thought this type of course should be included dur- ing the college education and continue from time to time after graduation in order to keep up with the rapidly changing, times. Edgeley Forum members felt that a post graduate_course in this matter would be most effec- tive as th student “could then specialize in whatever job they were working at and in that way get more benefit from the short course.” graduates have no understanding of the functions of farm organ- izations. Do you believe this? Is lack of knowledge a serious han- dicap in working with farm peo- ple? 2. Do .ou think college graduates working in agriculture should be able to obtain short courses in farm organization pol- icies? Should they obtain this before graduation? Markham Township dump on the t'ownline will be temporarin closed until road conditions im- prove. It is expected the road will be passable by May lst. Reeve Clark said. “In regard to our Planning Board and Plan- ning Director -- Council has to strongly support our Planning Director. Our 00575 for this de- partment are well below plan- ning boards in other districts." He then cited the cost per cap~ ita for the following areas: To- ronto Township 1.18. Trafalgar 1.17. North York 1.05: Etobicoke .93: Markham Township .71; Richmond Hill 1.60. "These fi- gures speak for themselves,” the Reeve said, “the ratepayers should know how little it is cost- ing them.” Generally speaking, one could conclude that Ontario Forums are in avor of helping college graduates to obtain a broader un- derstanding of the functions of farm organizations. There was quite a :leeided feeling that farm people themselves might benefit from a similar knowledge. 402 calls were made by Mark- ham Township Police during March. with 37 accidents inves- tigated. 4 warrants of committ- ment executed. 6 break and en- try (theft) and 1 fire call. Town- ship police cruisers covered 9,291 miles at a total cost of $388.97. ing Report for March 1960 shows a total of 12 building permits issued at a total value of $711,700. Industry and Commercial build- ing was $38,750. Public Building $621,400 of which $620,000 is for the York Central District High School Board building project at Bayview and Markham. $51,000 was listed in the report for 4 residential buildings. and acces- sory building amounting to $550 FUEI. First the killdeer’s arrival was noted, then Ring-bill- ed and Herring Gulls and the male red-winged ‘blackbirds and close behind them were the grac- kles. robins, co birds and even a vespra sparro . Two flocks of Canada geese with their myriad wings and their wild cries were observed passing over our, town. Wherever there were pools of grass the starlings were ’bob- bing here and there eating grubs and the grackles were more fus- sily busy, picking up one damp dead leaf after another as he looked for an insect which might be hidden beneath it. The purple finches started singing their full high‘pitched warble which has such a beautiful liquid quality. To add to this gay chorus, a flock of thirty redpolls not only kept up their continual twittering but burst out into a rippling trill. These lateer two birds will soon be flying north to their nest- ing areas. They will be missed but we can hope that we \v111 be as fortunate next winter in hav- ing as many flocks to brighten the more drab days and fill the air with their- gay twitterings.
