It seems most unfortunate that the wea- ther doesn’t co-operate. The peo- ple who braved the rain were well rewarded as it was a most in- teresting program. Miss Cowden’s class won the grade count award. Word was received that council has deferred any action on the community centre board until the new township council takes over January first. The salesmen for an electrical firm had demon- strated their tape-recorder to Mr. Martindaie and some of the staff, also Mrs. Aimone of the home and school and it was unani- mously agreed to purchase same. The question of the skating rink was then considered and a cheque for $50.00 was received from the women’s association of The High- land Park to help provide the necessary financial help to main- tain this rink for the season. Mr. E. Axelson volunteered to ap- proach council to see if this pro- ject might be considered under the winter works program. The first speaker of the evening was then introduced by Mrs. Arnott who first met Mrs. Booth when she was teaching at Hillcrest School in Toronto. From the be- ginning Mrs. Booth had her an- dience enthralled; she admitted being a teacher for many years and apologized for never having been a parent ‘but at the same time admitted having mothered a great many children. She com- menced her career in Toronto, married and lived in California, and after the death of her hus- band returned here and is at the present time a supply teacher with the Toronto Board of Edu- cation. Her present duties consist of taking over any class from grade 1 to grade 8 at any school in the downtown area. So versa- tile is she that she is capable of teaching grade 1 today and grade .6, 7, or 8 tomorrow. I think I caught her secret in the first few words she spoke when she ex- pressed her love for children, and stated one must teach a pupil. not a subject. She confessed she wasn’t a specialist'in any sub- ject but I, for one might contra- dict her and say she specializes in teaching children, and oh how I wished we could have her on the staff at Henderson. Her subject was reading and she cautioned us all to take a good look at our homes and find out what was there that was contagious. Our children arrive at school with their habits good or had already formed, the teacher must take over from there, a love of books and reading can be cultivate but how much more easily if t has its beginning in those early pre-school years. I for one was loath to see her sit down and was truly sorry more people were not there to hear her. When Mrs. Knight was introduced she said all she had planned to say had already been said by Mrs. Booth but most of that bears repeating. Unlike Mrs. Booth she is a par- ent and a grand-parent and most affectionately know as “Grand- ma Library" at that wonderful Henderson Ave. Home and School Assoc. - AL PYLE - If no unmet at TU. 4-3614 during daytlmE, call TU. 4-1105 or AV. 5-3316 REPAIRS REPAIRS Guesswork Is Eliminated NEW SCIENTIFIC METHOD “CHECKED” Electroncially WITH THE STROBOSCOPE Kept in Stock Portable Crane Service STEEL FABRICATING To Custom Specifications PINDER BROS. How many hours of entertainment and enrich- ment are available to our child- iren only they can decide; it is up to us to encourage them to avail themselves of the opportunities. The meeting closed with refresh- ments and a reminder about the December meeting which is in the form of a concert on Decem- ber the 12th. Sports TU. 4 - 3211 In dosing this weekil cannot help wondering why so many peo- ple are bore;d__i_n a_wo;1d full_of Tuesday night saw us once a- gain heading for Uxbridge Arena where sad to say we suffer- ed a painful defeat at the hands of that lucky Uxbridge league. Then they enlightened us some. what with the news that one boy alone scored over 100 goals in the play-offs last season, he now plays on the minor bantams and with the older boys although he is merely twelve years of age. In fact it's rather like playing an all-star league. This all helped to relieve our despondency. We hope to have a sponsor for the boys and will be pleased to pass on any information as soon as it be- comes official. Sunday morning at six a.m. Thornhill House Lea- gue practice at Richmond Hill. Ratepayers Association On Wednesday evening at 8 pm. a meeting of the Highland Park Association was held at Henderson Ave., School. It was decided to dispense with the by- law and proceed with nomina- tions and elections. The following people Were elected for the com- ing year. President, Mr. Briggs by acclamation. Vice President. Mr. Stubbly by acclamation. Secre- tary - Miss Violet Stewart, the present secretary (who is at pres- ent in hospital) by acclamation. Treasurer - Mr. Funnel once a- gain returned by acclamation. There followed an election for di- rectors, the very close results as follows: Mr. Hornshy. Mr. Broad- foot, Mr. McLellan, Mr. Brice, & Mr. Woolnough. Following these elections a few of the problems confronting the association were presented, and it is to be hoped everyone will show an active in- terest and support these officers in the tasks ahead of them. Im- mediately following this meeting Doncaster Ratepayers and other interested electors were invited to meet the candidates for Ward 1. With some many vitally im- portant issues pending at the present time we need your inter- est. Neighbourhood Notes _ I would like at this time to welcome the Williams family who this ’week moved into 48 Wood- ward Ave. They have two child- ren (Christine,) a little girl of a few months and Stephen who is seven and will be attending Hen- derson Ave. School. (I understand Mr. Williams is an avid gardener and just as soon as possible I hope to call and personally wel- come them. _so many thrillineg interesting things. Thursday afternoon there was a tea party ( at Thomhiil United Church) for the senior citizens of the community. I was delighted to hear that Mrs. Jenkinson was able to attend. It has been many months since she first took the stroke which has kept her bed- ridden, now with the help of a Emlce she is able to get about a tt e. After more than a Week having passed since it happened I fin- ally heard of the unfortunate ac- cident that befall Mrs. Meuser. It seems she suffered a fall on the steps of the subway and after preceding to her destination disâ€" covered she had hurt her leg. Af- ter a trip to Branson Hospital and some X-rays it was revealed she had cracked a small bone just below the knee and so she em- erged from the hospital with her leg encased in a cast from the hip to the toes. I understand it will be several weeks before this can be removed. We all hope the time will pass quickly and that once again we will see her smil- £ng face as she gets out and 3â€" out. A word of thanks to all the good folk who kindly obliged by putting op thg porch fights. 5k APPLIANCE REPAIRS 72g RADIO, TV & AERIALS Electric-TV. g); ELECTRIC WIRING {k OIL BURNER SERVICE if: REPAIRS & SERVICE REPAIRS 53 YONGE ST.
