Picking, who is president of the Yonge Street Business and Pro-j fessional Association and also vice-chairman of the recentlys formed Yonge Street Redevelop- ment Committee told “The Lib- eral" that it was not his inten- tion to leave Richmond Hill. “It‘s the one place in Canada I like tc call home," he declared. He will go back to his original love â€" writing, newspaper and radio work, after the transfer to Mr. Fisher is completed. A former managing editor of the Richmond Hill Liberal before he bought the Aurora Banner ten years ago, Col. Picking will. during the ab- sence of Publisher J. E. Smith on holidays, cover local munici- pal council activities for “The Liberal," a field of newspaper work in which he has specialized. He will also interpret York Coun- ty Council activities â€"-â€"~ which are Iikely to assume special import- ance for local residents this year â€" for “The Liberal”. With the move for additional hospital ac- commodation for York County under way, plus such other impor- tant matters such as the sugges- tion of police force reorganiza- tion. his experienced insight should bring “Liberal” readers a complete’and informed picture of affairs. Will Continue History Sale of York County’s leading office equipment and supply outlet was announced this week by Col. F. J. Pick- ing, its proprietor. The business, located at 16 Yonge Street North, Richmond Hill, known as York Office Equipment, has beén acquired by Boynton Fisher, sales manager of the company for 'the past year. Richmond Hill Fire Chit-.1 Alf Stong has issued an urgent re- quest to all homeowners m make certain to keep all cimbustible material away from heating un- its following the disastrous $5,000 fire February 1 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Heathcote, 22 Ruggles Avenue, Langstaff in which 16 dogs suffocated. The outbreak occurred at ap- proximately 11.25 pm. Chief Stong said 'his 14-mem’ber crew worked three hours in. bitter suo- zero weather before, bringmg the flames under control. The fire started in old papers placed too close to the basement furnace and caused considerable damage to the floor and wall-areas, badly charting the basement ceiling and blackening most of the liv- ingflroofim furnishings with smoke. The Heathcotes 5nd their three daughters escaped and were tak- en inAby a neighbour. 7 “Febfuary 1‘ was the worst fire-night of the year for us,” Col. Picking will continue a work on which he has been en- gaged for some time â€"â€" the writ- ting of a history of York County. While several histories are al- ready in existence it is his op- inion that they are all somewhat patchy and do not give a cohesive picture of the county since its emergence from the forest 164 years ago. He believes that the homely, domestic history of the county during the last sixty or seventy years is in danger of be- $5,000 Fire Damage, At Langstaff Toque, Not Crown ls Won By Mayor In Fishing Tilt Unless Richmond Hill’s Mayor James Haggart is a better vote- catcher than he is a fish-catcher his chances for re-election next year are not so good. Making his first venture into ice-fishing last Sunday at Barrie, the Mayor was denied even the opportunity of talking about the big one that got away. In plain English, he didn’t get a bite and so failed to uphold the honour of his municipality in the annual “Mayor’s Contest" staged between the civic leaders of Barrie and Richmond Hill. And, at that. he was trimmed by the town clerk of Barrie, a lesser civic luminary than_the Mayor. The contest which saw Mayor Haggart go down to defeat at the hands of Barrie's town clerk, B. Straughan, was part of a fishing jamboree staged by Richmond Hill Jaycees as an annual event. With Barrie's Mayor Kenzie. ab- sent, from town, the Haggart nose was rubbed 1n the snow when Town Clerk Straughan, subbing for his Mayor, landed a small trout - only capture in the con- test. Thirty four Jaycees made the trip to Barrie, where the blue skies and ‘pure snow and water offset the lack of fish. Winner of the derby was Howard Jack, Cartier Crescent, Richmond Hill, the day’s biggest catch being a pogqjand-q-half Whitefish. While failing to win the pisca- torial crown, Mayor Haggaxt came home hatted. A red and white toque was presented to him by Barrie‘s Town Clerk on behalf of Mayor Kenzie. With members of his Council expressing admira- tion, Mayor Haggart modelled it for them at Monday evening's Town Council meeting. "B-LN-G-O" was the call that proved an exciting and profitable win on Monday night ‘-- for two players at the regular weekly bingo game of the Richmond Hill Lions Club. The two lucky winners of the $500.00 jackpot, split on a “50-50” basis, were Mrs. Betty LeClerc, 454 Balkan Road, Richmond Hill, and Mr. Frank Thorpe, 231 Dun- can Road, Richvale. In the Lions Hall, close to 500 “bin- go enthusiasts” were pres- ent - a number of whom will undoubtedly be present at next Monday night’s bin- go" (especially as it is the 13th) - when another $500.00 is offered. Two Lucky Bingo Winners ing lost as old-timers who have been intimately acquainted with the- county's growth pass on and that it should be recorded while still available at first hand. He will, in addition. continue his “Parading with Pick” broadcast which has become a CJRH fea- ture at 6.30 on Monday evenings. New Owner Experienced York Office Equipment was founded five years ago and after operating in Aurora for some time moved to Richmond Hill in 1959 to take advantage of the needs of the fast-growing com- munity. It established a large dealer business ,as well as a local one. operating over several prov- inces. Its new owner, Boynton Fisher. brings a wide experience to his new business. After spending several years in the wholesale end of the office equipment and sup- ply business he joined York 0f- fice Equipment as sales manager a year ago. said Chief Stong. “It must have been 10 below zero. It was so cold that the pump on the fire truck froze up on us after the fire had been brought under control.” The firefighters were individually alerted by a special fire alarm connecting their homes with the chief’s office. “The men did a wonderful job.” said the chief. The regular monthly business meeting of the Richmond Hill Lions Club was held in the Lions Hall on Thursday. February 2nd, with Lion President Dianny Fea- therstonhaugh presiding. Various committees made their reports. The health & welfare committee reported an expenditure of $673.89 for the past five months, covering assistance given in var- ious ways to needy people. A wheel chair was loaned to the Maple Lions Club. The boys & girls committee sponsored sever- al dances in the Lions Hall for ‘Teentovwn” and also seventh 8; eighth graders. The crippled children's committee advised that $17.50 had been spent for repairs to a spinal brace for a young boy. 1st Beverley Acres Troop On Tuesday last, the lst Bever- ley Acres Scout Troop underwent some further training on their programme theme for the year “survival.” They were very for- tunate indeed to have Mr. Stu. Hamilton from the group com- mittee. who‘ is employed at the Department of Lands and Forest, present a beautiful colour film entitled “The Lost Hunter.” Fol- lowing the films, Scoutmaster Norm Foster led a very active discussion period on the makeup of a pocket Survival Kit. A col- ourful ten page booklet which was prepared by Norm was then handed out to each member of the troop. During the closing ceremony. Scouts Ed Miller and Brian Robinson were invested linto the world wide Scout move- _ment. Final plans were made lfor their participation in the district annual hobby show February being International Counsellors month in Lionism the two counsellor members of the club - Dick Edmunds and Bob Little - were seated at the 'head table, and Lion Harold Sanderson gave a brief talk on the meaning of the title "International Coun- sellor" -_which is a life title given to a Lion who has satisfactorily discharged his duties as district governor for one year A ten year perfect attendance pin was pre- sented to Past-President Harold Sanderson. Lion Bill Calder. chairman of the “other activities” committee. presented a check for $5,400.00 to treasurer Lion George Fen- wick. being the net proceeds of the Christmas party elimination draw. The hall committee an- nounced a considerable increase in demand for rentals since the recent improvements had made the hall so attractive. “i'irliéiavérage attendance for the month of January was 89.2%.; Lions Nick Haliman and Dr. John Wynne are members of a committee which is sponsoring a gala bonspiel for all Lions in the district, which will be held at the Richmond Hill Curling Club on Saturday, March 25th. Draws will be made at 9 and 11 am. It took two years at least, with three beingopreferable, to arrange the big event. said Mr. Clark, hence the necessity of action being taken this year to secure the event.
