As the area was not a “built-up†one within the meaning of the High- ways Traffic Act, a 30-mile limit could not be automatically impos- ed. The area was undoubtedly dan- gerous, said Reeve Wilfred Dean, with other members of council agreeing. The road was narrow, it was declared, with no shoulder on one side. Turning from roads to taxis, members of council heard Town- ship Clerk H. Crisp declare that the present taxi by-law was inad- equate. Unusual Divisions MarkCountyVotes York County Council saw un- usual- divisions when votes were called for at its four-day session held in the county offices at Newmarket last week. On one oc- casion council voted unanimously except for one man. Reeve Sid- ney Legge of Newmarket, who smilingly said afterwards that it wasn’t the first time he had stood alone, was the lone dissen- ter when the contentious hospital vote was rescinded the day after it was passed, On another occasion only two members of council voted in fa- vour of a resolution to make an additional grant to Markham Fair. Their would-be generosity was based on the loss of the arena last year. On still another occasion De- puty Reeve Caroline Ion of New- market, the County’s first wo- man Commissioner, found herself allied with only two others when a vote on the proposition to make relief a county responsibility was taken. That vote also saw an unusual division, fourteen county council. lors, voting in favour and thirteen against. The missing vote of the 28 which could be registered on a recorded vote was that of War- den Joseph Fry who. naturally, did not vote as there was no tie. That township membership in the County and Municipal Sec- tion of the Ontario Educational Association be not taken out because it has not been the prac- tice of the township to be a mem~ ber of that organization. Authorized the roads superin- tendent to acquire cots for de- partment employees who when they work overtime must spend the night at the township garage. Moved that the local agents commission due from the place- ment of the township’s insurance with A. E. Wilson 8: Co. Revenue to take care of that amount will come from the province, which will give a grant of $60,000. Old age security payments and pay- ments by residents able to contribute to their own sup- port, together with old age assistance for blind persons, will bring in $39,000. Direct cost to the County of York ratepayers will be $30,000. Budget $130,000 will be included in the budget of York County Council for 1961 for main- tenance of York Manor, the home for the aged of the county, council decided at its meeting last week.
