He added that the Ontario Division’s pub- lic relations department would keep in close touch with ‘The Liberal.‘ “As soon as we have set a date for the dinner meeting, the public, through the press 33d other means will be inform- e ‘9' Mrs. Jean Thomson, Richmond Hill’s recreational director, told ‘The Liberal‘ that the idea for the club was the brainchild of Stephen Glass, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Glass of 409 Fernleigh Circle. Mr. McAdam said that Presi- dent-elect J.R.M. Wilson, ontario Division, plans to organize a din- ner meeting in Richmond Hill. “Letters will go out to all the local organizations and interest- ed individuals,” he said. “The meeting will explain to the rep- resentatives of the various groups the nature and purpose of Red Cross, what such a unit can do for Richmond Hill, the number and types of services available. and how a branchoperatesi” _ April 25 will be an all-import- ant day for Richmond Hill young- sters, 10 years of age and over, interested in the flying of model aircraft. They have been invited to turn out at the Council Cham- bers at 7.30 pm. to organize the proposed Model Air Craft Fly- ing Club. "Stephen called me some time ago," she explained. “He brought me any number of books on the subject, and asked if I could help lay the groundwork for the or- ganization. In subsequent weeks I held several meetings with cit- izens like Mr. L. L‘eavens, A. Haworth and Ron Cooper, and D. M. Ireland. In one way or an- other all these men have been or are connected with flying, and they took to the idea in great style." The proposed Hurlburt apart- ments at Elizabeth and Centre Streets. Richmond Hill, are still hanging fire after months of ne- gotiations. They were discussed again at a planning board meet- ing this week, with Mayor Hag- gart present. Urging that some action be taken without further delay, the Mayor pointed out that the property paid only a very small tax at the present time but. with apartments as proposed, would return a considerable a- mount to municipal finances. "We cannot build a fence 3- round this town" declared the Mayor as he quoted figures to prove that the project was an acceptable one. Comparison with Toronto figures, he said. indicat- ed that the population density proposed was not too high. The planning board refused to take any action following the Mayor's plea, saying that “a study was under way." To begin with, the club will be restricted to 75 or 80 members. There will be a membership fee of $1 per year which will cover insurance costs in the event: of property damage. Mrs. Thomson said that the adults presently in- terested are getting information from model aircraft clubs in To- ronto and will see to it that the club in the Hill is properly sup- ervised by responsible older per- sons. There is every indication that a Canadian Red Cross Society unit will shortly be organized in Richmond Hill. Mr. W. R. Mc- Adam, Assistant Commissioner. Ontario Division, told ‘The Lib- eral’ on Monday that the recep- tion given by several promin- ent individuals in the Hill to Mr. Bud Fisher. a society super- visor, last week, was ‘most en- couraging.’ Model Air Craft Anyone requiring further in- formation is requested to tele- phone TU. 4-3861 or TU. 4-2957. Following the meeting, both Mayor Haggart and Chairman Ross Scrimger of the planning board. were asked for statements. “It's a shame our efforts to at- tract good assessment are being hampered. by lack of progressive thinking,” said the Mayor. “I shall be presenting the issue to council shortly. Most of its mem- bers are aware that good assess- ment brought in today means holding the line on taxes next year," he said. “When Mr. Hurlburt‘s architect left here we were in agreement with a 72-apartment set-up, with set-backs and road widening as called for," said Mr. Scrimger. “Mr. Hurlburt has since asked to erect a higher building with 80 apartments and heavier popula- tion density. A study of the stan- dards we want to set for the area is being made. That might take two or three weeks.” Prior to consideration of the Hurlburt apartments a long dis- cussion took place with members of the Industrial Commission. Present were Joseph Paterson, chairman; John Graham, mem- ber and Robert Langford, indus- trial commissioner. "We must be ready to get our share,” he declared. “More enquiries were being received at the present time than for a very long while." he said.
