There will be another in the series of special film programs for children at the Richmond Theatre, next Saturday at 10 am. and at 2 pm. The feature will be “Toto and the Poachers.†photographed in color. Toto is an African boy vshose uncle is a scout on 8 Kenya game reserve. He sees two strang- er: carrying elephant tusks. He knows they are poachers but the adults will not believe his story when he tells them. So Toto with his pet monkey sets out to catch the poachers, only to be caught himself. But he is rescued by the game reserve scouts. Saturday Films For Youngsters At The Theatre This picture illustrates a prin- cipal of making films for child- ren, which was learn-ed early in their experience by Mary Field and her staff. One of the first pictures they made was “Jean's Plan.†It was sent back from the censors marked “Adults Only." Miss Field was very sur- prised at this for they thought they had made the film very carefully. It was an exciting story, it had a documentary background. the characters were in the round and a moral was present but not obtrusive. So they asked the cen- sors what was the matter. The thing they had done wrong was to show a frightened child. The censors said you must never show children the picture of a child who is frightened. So a valuable lesson was learned, and you will- notice in all C.F.F. pictures that although children may get them- selves into difficult situations, they are never frightened. The children in the audience identify themselves with the children on the screen, and by the time Toto gets himself caught by the poach- ers he is known to be both brave and resourceful. He is not fright- ened himself so the children know he will be all right. Mary Field recounts many oth- er incidents such as the above encounter with the Censors in her book called “Good Company.†This book covers the years she was working for J. Arthur Rank, making children's entertainment ï¬lms, and may be borrowed by any Home & School member from the Courtice Memoï¬al Library.
