Appointed some months ago by town coun- ‘cil, the committee is acting in an advisory capacity in studying the re-development of the down-town business area. It co~operates with the Richmond Hill Planning Board. The new members were named to give representa- tion to residents of areas contiguous to the section under consideration for re-development. Mr. Boyd represents the area west of Yonge Street and Mr. Sanderson that on the east. GEORGES POTVIN Photo by Lagerquist business section, and his assoc- iate, Mr. A. Tayyeb. The consul- tanlts outlined the scope and me- thods of their investigation. They said that they would maintain Recent carefully compiled sta- tistics flowing from an exhaustive survey show that out of the 425,00 Canadian children in their first year in school some 142,000 will drop out before reaching high school, some 60,000 of those who attain junior matriculation plateau will reach their senior year of high school . . . . and only 35,000 (one out of nine) will graduate from high school. All this in a society Where ed- ucation is becoming more vitally important than ever before. Thousands Doomed Every year for thousands of young men and women a life of sporadic employment, frustrations and unhappiness begins. They simply are not fitted in, it is too At Its recent meeting the com- mittee also welcomed Mr. Georges Potvin, town planning consultant engaged by the Planning Board to study and make a report on redevelopment of the down-(own by Axel Sjoberg (CGA - IGAS) One facet of grapho analysis is vocational guidance and like many others who test for apti- tu-des and help develop of chan- ne' talent HA5, view with alarm the waste of Canada's most precious natural resource . . . . . brainpower. Recent carefully compiled sta- tistics flowing from an exhaustive survey show that out of the 425,00 Canadian children in their first year in school some 142,000 will drop out before reaching high school, some 60,000 of those who attain junior matriculation plateau will reach their senior year of high school . . . . and only 35,000 (one out of nine) will graduate from high school. All this in a society where ed- ucation is becominz more vitally much to hope they will properly relate to society, and 50, year after year this frustration and unhappiness turn into alcoholism, prostitution and other forms of neuroticism. But society must take care of them. Society pays the shot by forking over more and more taxes to pay for more jails, more hospitals, more courts. more relief. This cost annually amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars. One would suppose it would be much saner, and cheap. er. to spend a fraction of this money on more and better voca- tional guidance schemes. more generous bursaries, subsidized work programs. While a start has been made, much more re- mains to be done. Mr. Potvin will head the project. His colleague, Mr. Tay- yeb, will direct the field survey, assisted by Miss Leslie Yule. Their report is expected to be ready about October 11th. Understanding Essential Goodwill and understanding on the part of all] concerned were absolutely essential in connection ‘with Yonge Street re-developâ€" ment. It was stressed at the meeting. P lic knowledge of what was be ng attempted was regarded as being vitally necess- ary. Agreeing fully with this. the consultants said that they would co-operate as fully as pos-- sible in providing information. Gra‘pho Analysts are some of a growing number who say vo- cational guidance should begin in high school and in public school. But here society continues re- miss. Few Canadian public schools have the help of a well-trained guidance counsellor; fewer still can call in specialized help of an educational psychologist. It is suggested that every urban sys- ‘tem involving 100 teachers needs :qualified psychologist. How ma- ny townships employing this number of teachers boast of this kin-d of aid? Share The Blame Mr. Georges Potvin, who will direct the Yonge Street study. is assistant professor in Human and Economic Geography at the Un- iversity of Toronto, where he has taught for eleven years. A native of the Gaspe Peninsula. he was educated at Sacred Heart Col- lege, Bathurst. and Laval Univer- sity. He also heads his own plan- ning consultants firm in Toronto. Made Many Studies pt oblems. School boarcs continue to be penny wise and pound fool- ish in many respects and will continue so until an aroused pub- lic opinion gives them a chance to lead, when they will not have to shrink from scepticism and animosity among taxpayers who grumble that education already is too expensive. Meanwhile, Can- ah’s most important national re- source . . . brain power . . . goes largely unused. Ways To Help He took part in the redevelop- ment’renewal study of the city of Toronto, the first project of Vocational guidance schemes will do two things . . . help to bring to the surface much more creativity than the nation now dreams exists, enable society to more properly channel that cre- ativity, and help uncover, deci- pher and so deal with personal- ity problems which not only have profound implications but doom thousands of young citi- zens to outright failure at the worse and dra‘b mediocrity at the best, and sometimes one wonders which is the worse, Vocational guidance, character analysis, psy- chological probing, therapy where needed in the home or in the school, a new national atmos~ phere which will honor intelli- gence and potential . . . these are some of the crying needs at our time. Countless Examples School teachers and education- al administrative bodies alone are not to blame. They too have their From personal experience this writer alone knows scores of young persons who wound up with cheap drink and endless debts, in juvenile courts and breadlines, and almost without exception these people simply did not get the chance to com- plete their educations or the op. portunity to find out what it was they might 'be best fitted to do. City after city today pays millions of dollars each year looking after these pathetic derelicts and try- in; out rehabilitative programs which, while certainly essential, can be likened to the absent min- ded farmer who locked his barn after his prize horse had wanâ€" dered away.
