Richmond Hill. *1w24 All phases of police work had increased, declared the commi't- tee, with a great deal of time being spent in major crime in- vestigations. That increase was general in all departments. it was said. Finger-printing and photography, for instance, was up considerably. ‘ H 41.; DECEMBER 18 â€" Monday 8 pm. Richmond Hill Bridge Club, Richmond Thea/Ere Grill, Tur- key Bpidge. Admission $1.25. c1w24 “This shows the more serious nature of some crimes that are on the increase in the County of York," said county council‘s police committee, making its re- port to the full council. It pointed out that there were more cases in higher courts this year as evidence of the increase in major crimes. Policing of courts by the county's security guard had also increased greatly. A further problem along these lines would come into existence with the opening of a court in Richmond L-:_,. Hill Serious Crimes Are Increasing Committee Says sought Coming Events A: Eoiution was being c1w24 (By Toby Shore) A former re-eve and council member of Vaughan Township, James H. Robson celebrated his 80th birthday on November 24, at his home on the 7th con- cession. Vaughan. Gathered around him were 30 members of his family in- cluding his sons Frank, Bert and Charlie and his daughter, Jean, (Mrs. Roy Bowen), who all live nearby and daughters Helen (Mrs. Wes Obleman) of Lem- berg, S'ask., and Marion (Mrs. Ray McDougall), of Calgary, Alberta and several friends. Mr. Robson was born in the Purpleville Area, Vaughan In a New York junkyard of old can not so long back, a man with a sharp eye for antique autos found a delapidated hulk thafc appeared to be of European vintage. A Vaughan Township girl, Anne Miller of Nashville, won provincial honours recently and was presented with one of four Ontario Women’s Institute Scholarships at the York Coun- ty 4-H Homemaking Club Ach- ievement Day held in Aurora. The award, valued at $100, was presented by Mrs. Elton He paid the un- suspecting j u n k dealer $350 for it and thereby got the ' world’s rarest and most valuable clas sic car. It was a Bugatti . Royale, made around 1927‘ by a strange feudal sort of auto maker M. R. Bear in French Alsace-Lorraine. Every piece of the intricate, 130 mileâ€"an-hour beauty was hand made and to antique car collectors the $350 junk was priceless. It is to car collectors what a rare stamp is to stamp collectors. Vaughan Girl Winner 0f 4-H Scholarship Originally the car cost $40,- 000 _ for the engine and chas- sis, acnd King Alphonso of Spain, its original owner, paid extra for the coachwork. This car. In the language of car dealers, was a “clunker”. Most dealers run across clun- kers now and then. although few ever have the thrill, or the misfortune. to acquire a hidden gem like the Bugatti Royale. But the “as is” car can be a godsend for the man with a little mechanical knack, or the time and interest to repair it. An old car though, is a problem for the car dealer â€" he knows that the car is basically sound, but the price it would bring even in top shape isn’t worth turning skilled mechanics loose on it. We often have good older cars that can be run for a year or a summer without fixing, of- fering transportation that’s al- most cheaper than shoe leather. THE DODGE ONTARIO CAR CO. The winner has also completed 12 homemaking projects, qual- ifying her for provincial hon- ours. Always active in the commun- ity Mr. Robson was a member of the local school board until 1921 when he ran for council On entering their home, Mr. and Mrs. Abbey were amazed to find the inter-floa- beaut-ifully dec- oralted with golden streamers and yellow Chrysanthemums. Their next surprise was to find forty guests arriving, who were greeted by the bridal couple of fifty years ago, Mrs. Abbey re- ceiving the guests and wore a grey taffeta silk dress, with pink rose corsalge. Surprise â€" in fact, several surprises â€" greeted Mr. and Mrs. Walter Abbey when theytg returned to their home at 123! r,‘ Garden Avenue, ngstafi, early om the evening of November 23rd.
