December 15th. And the winning team must have bad second sight when they called themselves the “Wee Dunn-its" at the beginning of the season. because that's what they did. won first prize. Cap- tained by Doris Dunnctt. the team members were Carl Packer, Sunni Phillips. Ray Pickthall. Edna McLeod and Cecil Smith. Runners-up were the “Sic- Six" captained by Les Moore. with teammates Zinna Duma. Coca Buchanan. John Phillips, Pat Cunningham and Noel Craw- ford all giving a good account of themselves. The high ladies for the eve- ning were Evelyn Stephens with a high-triple score of 658 and Cathy Dawson with a high single score of 300. Top gents were Al McDonald with a high triple of 659 and Art McLeod with a high single of 272. All scores are with handicaps. Women’s Institute Mrs. H. Carroll's home on No. 7 highway, Langstaff. was the scene of a pretty Christ- mas luncheon held by the la- dies of the Thornhill Women’s Institute on December 14th. There were 18 ladies, and they had three guests. Miss Beverley Chrarbonvick and Mr. Kevin Maher from the Villa Hospital, and Mrs. Jamieson's three-year- old granddaughter. Cathy. The tables were prettin decorated with red candles in white birch holders, trimmed with sprigs of evergreen. and the ladies all enjoyed the delicious dishes brought by the various mem- bers. Following a short business aession. presided over by the president, Mrs. C. Thompson, the meeting was turned over to the program committee, con- Lions Christmas Party The boys and girls at the Thornhill Lions Club Annual Chr presents are handed out to one and all. Santa Claus this year was ably played by AV. 5-2331 Thorn sisting of Mrs. Mizen, Mrs“ Jamieson and Mrs. Williamson. Mrs. Sinclair read a poem en- titled “The Four Christmases".‘ and Kevin Maher sang a beau- tiful solo. “Silver Bells“. while Beverley Charbonick gave a lovely rendition of “Going Home for Christmas". The whole group then sang severali favourite carols and enjoyed some games and a scrambled word contest. Each member had‘ brought a gift for a cancer patient and the ladies also ex- changed gifts among themselves. A lucky draw was held for a painting donated by Mrs. E. Williamson. singing of God Save the Queen and the members all went home happy from the last meeting of 1961. Nursery School Some twenty tots of the Thornhill Nursery School en- tertained their mothers and several younger siblings at a Christmas Party held at the classrooms of the Presbyterian Church on December 20th. With plenty of verve. if little tune. they sang “Jingle Bells" and “Away in a Manger". but really hit their stride with “Who Is Coming on Christmas Night"! Highlight of the occasion was when the children proudly preâ€" sented their mothers with a painstakingly contrived table centrepiece. made from a block of styrofoam appropriately deco- rated with pine cones, ever- green twigs and tiny Christmas ornaments. As they carried their treasure down the room. the childrens' faces were a study. and well schooled in nurâ€" sery technique. the mothers re- sponded with appropriate en- thusiasm. (But 1 wonder how many mothers had the fortitude to carry this through by using their work of art as the Christ- mas table centrepiece? Don’t worry though. if you used it on the table every night until Christmas. it' was probably well admired and quite possibly de- molished.) The meeting closed with the y 28. 1961 It appears that the children must have been working busilyl for weeks past making Christ- m-as tree decorations. for their little tree was certainly well decorated. And while the chil- dren had only decorated the tree the day before. they saw it happily denuded. as the teachers divided the ornaments up among the children to take home. There were bells and stars cut from styroioam and. painted with poster colours. charming bells made from egg cartons. painted and trcatcd with; “glitter”. and gay candles made from foil-covered toilet paper rolls. (One thing you learn if ou have a child in nursery‘ school. NEVER throw out a toi- let paper roll.) l While the children enjoyed. their usual "refreshment time" with apple juice and a cookie in another room, the mothers chatted together over glass of apple cider and coffee cake. Mrs. Ruth Gall. president of the nursery school parents association. spoke briefly to the mothers and thanked the teach~ crs. Mrs. Kelk and Mrs. Ives. for making the day such a suc- cess. The only dull note was sounded with the announcement that the school supervisor. Mrs. Carlotta Broderick. was suffer- ing from a virus pneumonia and was most disappointed that she could not be present. The party was over by 11 am. and. bundled once more into their snowsuits. the chil- dren pranced and danced away hearing, as well as a gay card from their teachers. a bundle of Christmas goodies. containâ€" ing a box of raisins. a tangerine and a candy cane. Baptist Church News The Couples Club of the Bap- tist Church held their Christ- mvas party at the Summit View Gardens. Richmond Hill. on December 15th.
