Picking informed the members that Richmond Hill was first called Miles Hill, after one of the first residents and later the name was changed to Mount Pleasant. ‘the journey. This settlement {with its members fighting every iinch of the way settled and re- mained. In York County today the Pennsylvania Dutch continue their farming and their contin- uing influence can be seen on Markham Township. These are the men who founded the land we call home. i Miles Hill First In 1802 another settlement began. They came by wagon train from Pennsylvania travel- ling a trail 450 miles long and taking eight weeks to complete Eventually troubles were ma- ny, debt, lack of supplies. The flour mill failed. This led to the ruin of the settlement but even in failure some of the settlers remained. To add to this settlement, in 1794 a brigade of baltteraux ar- rived in Toronto Bnay, bringing 64 German families, together with livestock, supplies, imple- ments and equipment for a saw and grist mill. They finally set- tled in Markham Township in a place that still bears the name German Mills. To understand fully the his- tory of Richmond .Hill, Col. Picking went back to 1700 in Germany. At this time a group of Mennonites from the Upper Rhine, being persecuted for their religious beliefs set out for Pennsylvania. On their arrival, similar religious persecution exâ€" isted and they started on the long journey which carried them to Markham Township. Col. F. J. Picking, news edi- tor of “The Liberal", was the guest speaker. Hvis subject is “The History of Richmond Hill”. Rev. Father Robinson spoke 3to the members concerning the discipline of their children. He mentioned the fact mothers are busy most of the day and some- times into the evening. The fa- thers on their arrival home should take the responsibility in respect to the child's daily be- havior. If the child requires punishment the husband should assist his wife by taking the necessary action, he said. History Given Pat Killeau commented on the sudden death of Rev. Rather Enrighut and thanked members for their presence at the funer- al home and the higlf mass. Joe Samson informed mem- bers a parish draw is to be run with proceeds going towards the building of the church. Mem- bers wishing to contribute time should call Joe Samson or his committee. Percy Coe told members the hockey rink on the school grounds is being well cared for under the direct-ion of Tom 0r- mesher and his work teams. Thanks were extended to Hughes Shell Sta-Dion for don- ating time and a mechanical scraper last Saturday morning for the purpose of clearing the rink. i Frank Hishon reported on the fine effort put forth by his un- employment committee. Job-s have recently been found for six unemployed men. A number of men are still unemployed and members were given a run- down of their trades. Members were urged to notify this com- mittee of any vacancies they learn of and further report on cases of unemployment. Percy Coe reported a skating party has been arranged for the evening of February 17 to take place at the rink in the school grounds, weather permitting. Tickets will be sold at the rink. Music and refreshments will be served. Bob O'Toole will a-r- range for the refreshments. Employment Helped John Pennyfather. in his re- port, said the Millionaire's Night held January 26 had been successful. Appreciation was extended to Percy Coe and his committee for their fine job of organization. Reported by R. M. Mrs. DeFoe taught ihe girls new hymns. ...»w.. u... nu rose production. i Col. Picking mentioned the population in Richmond Hill in 1951 was 2140 compared with today's population of over 17.- 000. In his opinion the growth between 1955 and today was poorly organized in respect to a proper balance between resi- dences, commerce and industry, but he went on to say the town is now financially sound and taking the necessary steps to create a proper balance. This in time should relieve residences from the high tax burden, Born Sarah Benfield, she left England in her late teens to come to Canada alone, where she worked on a farm near Bradford. She married Fletcher Thompson and moved to a farm on Bond Lake. Besides the farm. they once owned and oper- ated Ridge Inn. and at the time of Mr. Thompson’s death fifteen years ago, also operated the Log Cabin Garage. Mrs. Thompson has lived on the South Road, Oak Ridges, where her flower garden was a source of pleasure to many people. was again changed to Richmond Hill and its motto. "In the Rose I Flourish" taken from the Duke’s crest. This now is a very fitting motto since one of our most famous industries is rose production. i In conclusion Col. Picking likened the new residents of to- day to the original settlers of 1700 since most move here of their own free will. This type of person, in his opinion. makes for a fine citizen eager to take an interest in the community, churches and schools as did the first settlers. VICTORIA SQUARE NEWS CORRESPONDENT: MRS. W.
