Through the years the business steadily expanded un- til, in 1946. the fleet had been built up to eight cars, all radio equipped. Two years later the firm boasted a fleet of 10 cars requiring a staff of 12 people. The company's first major ex- pansion came in 1948 when the partners decided to branch in- to bus service. The firm, now sporting the name Newmarket Taxi and Bus Lines acguired two ten-year-old Ford busses and started a local service. The new bus service, on top of the still-expanding taxi business, necessitated the renting of gar- lovely Regency bungalow being age facilities. _ ‘ age facilities in the Hill. there1 fore, in 1958, the present gar- age was built on Enford Road.‘ The present name. Trailwaysj of Canada, was given to the! operation in 1959 because New-1 market Coach Lines name no longer applied. Also that year the firm applied for permission to charter out of Toronto. A firm can only run charters from a municipality in which it has these privileges and up until this time the Needler enterprise could only run charters from Richmond Hill and Newmarket. The permission to run charters from Toronto was granted in July of that year. In its own right the start of this line is a big step forward, extending travel fac- ilities to residents on the west side of Richmond Hill 1and points south, but for Trailways of Canada it is merely another step. This doesn't mean that the Bath- urst line won’t be just as important to the firm as the rest of its extensive travel service, it's just that Trail- ways have been taking big steps forward since original transportation services were started in Newmarket 1 back in 1942. Traiiiays Of Canada Started With Two Taxis Half Million Miles Run Annually By Busses Ol Richmond Hill Firm What is now known as Trail-v ways of Canada had its begin- ning inwa twg-car tail ‘stand V In 1949, Newmarket Taxi and‘ Bus Lines received a contract from Newmarket High School to transport about 50 students per day. Because of the con- tract the company found it me- cessary to buy another bus, the firm‘s first brand new one. The following year the company got another school contract which made it necessary to buy an- other new bus. By thls time the staff had Increased to 14. In 1951 the firm started its expansion out of the town and into the surrounding territory with the acquisition of an exist- ing bus line between Mount A1- bert and Newmarket. This oper- ation included charter privileges which meant that the company could charter out of Newmar- ‘ket. This run is still in exist- ence. The new! year. the firm had to get three more busses be- cause all Newmarke-t High School transportation was now handled by Newmlarket Taxi and Bus Lines. Tha-t December Mr. Needler took over the com- plete opermion of the bus lines iand his partner carried on with \the taxi business. New Name Given In January 1953. Newmarket Coach Lines came into being with a total of six busses oper‘ a~ting. The firm rented garage facilities, but these were found to be too small and on occasion it was necessary for Mr. Need- ‘ler to carry out extensive re- lpairs outside in the middle of the winter. The firm's own gar- age was built during the sum- mer of 1954 on Davis Drive in Newmarket because of the need for more space and better fac- ilities. The same year, Newma‘rké! Coach Lines bought a used charter bus to carry the load of the expanding chapter work and in 1955 we first new “high- way coach". also used for char- ter work. was purchased. In 1956 the coach lines made application to establish a bus route on the east side of Rich- mond Hill to serve the new development that had begun to crop up there. The route runs into Toronto. As proof that part of Bayview Avenue's recent con- dition has prevailed for some time. Mr. Need‘ler remembers that someone remarked at the hearing. held prior to the ap- proval of the new run. that the proposed bus run would pro- bably be a success as long as the vehicles were equipped with seat belts to hold passengers in their seats while on Bayview Avenue. The new route was fin- ally approved and on April 9. almost five years ago to the day, the first Bayview Avenue run was made. Although the first day’s fare was not too pro- mising only 18 people all day. Trailway busses now make 13 return trips per day, requiring seven vehicles. {Young Athlete Is Victim On July 1, 1958, a local bus service was started in Rich- mond Hill, and as a result the local run in Newmarket was discontinued. The Town of Rich- mond Hill subsidizes the local operation. A crash in which three ve- hicles were involved took the life of Morley Rossiter Irvine Jr.. 16, of Elmgrove Avenue, Oak Ridges, at the CFRB side- road north of Oak Ridges last Monday afternoon at 2.30 p.m.. and brought serious injuries to three other persons. When questioned by “The Liberal" as to his success for- mula, Mr. Needler indicated that a capable staff. an under- standing wife and long hours were the prime reasons the firm has prospered.
