He originally joined the company as a sales- man on the head off-ice staff in Toronto. In 1944 he was ap- pointed manager of the Bow- manville branch, where he re- mained until the beginning of this year. Mr. DeGeer not only has a fine record of service with the Sheppard and Gill Lumber Company, but an equally goodl Service is the motto at Shep- pard and Gill Lumber Com- pany, 71 Centre St. E. â€" service not only to the public, but ser- vice to the company by its em- ployees. A total of 150 years service is represented in the accompanying picture of the staff of this firm which has been in business in the Hill since March. 1930. At that time, Frank Schissler came from the company's head office in Toronto to take over‘ the management of the yard at 71 Centre St. E. which had been purchased from the Jones Lum- ber Company. Mr. Sch-issler managed the yard for 29 years, retiring at the end of 1959. after a total of 32 years service with :the firm. The above picture of the staff of the Shep- pard & Gill Lumber Company, 71 Centre St. E., Richmond Hill represents a total of 150 years service with the company. Left to right they are Walter DeGeer, manager, 26 years with the com- pany; Violet McFeeters, 18 years; Frank Schiss- ler, retired manager, 32 years; Steve Young, record of public service. While in Bowmanville he served as president of the Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the town council for five years. He is also a past president of the Rotary Club there and past District Governor of Rotary in southern Ontario. Mr. DeGeer is presently living at 50 Benson Avenue and will certainly make ‘a useful contribution to life on lthe Hill. Mr. DeGeer‘s right hand man} at the yard turns out to be something of a surprise to the customers. “He” is Miss Violet McFeeters, herself a veteran of 18 years service with the com- pany. When he first went to Bowmanville, Mr. DeGeer ex- pressed the wish to one of the local inhabitants for a good smart girl in his office. Miss McFeeters was pointed out to him as “the smartest girl in town" and Mr. DeGeer promptly prevailed on her to join his staff. Miss McFeeters has also been active in community activities and served for two years as president of the Business and Professional Women’s Associa- tion of Bowmanville, For three years she was chairman of the Provincial Emblems Committee of this organization and also served on the survey and re- search committee for the pro- vincial body. Miss McFeeters is now staying with Mrs. Robin- son on Church St. I The other members of the staff also have enviable records of service: Huck Young. in charge of house sales and ser- vice. 20 years; Steve Young, yard foreman, 27 years; Lorne Sheardown. shipper-driver, 14 years and Bill Sheardolwn, ship- per-driver. 13 years. yard foreman, 27 years; Lorne Sheardown, ship- per-driver, 14 years; Huck Young, in \charge of house sales and service, 20 years. This is. the old Warnica home, immed- iately west of the yard, which has been completely re-built and renovated into a bright modern showcase for the firm's varied merchandise. Never forgetting that their business is primarily lumber, the firm has designed the new office using seven different woods. The graceful staircase, leading upstairs to the home improvement department is built of birch with oak stair treads. The rear section of the showroom is finished in knotty pine, while the other end is 1 clone in mahogany plywood. The pillars and ceiling beams are , encased in red cedar; the coun- ters surrounding the office are l of fir ply with arborite tops and :the display counters are made _ of poplar plywood. This is a good op- portunity to meet the genial manager. Mr. DeGeer. and in- spect the wide variety of mat- erial and equipment with which his firm is ready to supply the homeowners of the district. Separates for summer will be the fashion for 130 York County 4-H homemaking club girls when the warm months arrive. Gay prints and soft pastels from a wide array of summer fabrics have been combined by. the girls in the making of .very attractive outfits of summer skirts. tops and shorts. These garments are part of the home- making clubs spring project which bears the name separates Lfor summer. Separates For Summer 4-H Homemaking Idea The project will be completed} on May 12th, at the achievement day which is being held in the Aurora District High School Auditorium. The members from each of the four-teen homemak- ing clubs in the county, will take part in the morning activi- ties which begin at 9:00 am. These include two judging clas- ses and an activity of material selection and co-ordination for sets of summer separates. Through this program each in- dividual gains valuable experi- ence by weighing values and making decisions and in self ex- pression. The afternoon program begins at 1:30. An invitation is ex- tended to all to attend. A pre- sentation of either an exhibit, skit or demonstnation will be given by each club. Highlights of the program will be the club showings of the garments mod- elled by eachrmember. _ VAt fife conclusion of the pro- gram certificates of achieve- ment will be presented. KING TOWNSHIP : Three‘ township residents were recent- ly convicted for setting graes fires without first getting per- ‘mits (from the township office. Two of those convicted were fined $25 and the other was placed on suspended sentence.
