Recently it was sold for Miss Ruth Collins, by David McLean Ltd.. and the new owners Messers Joseph Ar- rigo and J. V. DiGiulio, want the land for commercial purposes. Miss Collins gave the benches to the Pioneer Village at Edgeley, and at one time is was rumoured that the ‘house would be moved to the village and pre-l served as a museum. Thomas and John Steele were respected inn- l keepers, and ran a good hotel,‘ but as railway travel increased: in favour. business at the Poplar . House, as at other stopping-. places on Yonge St., d'windle-di in volume. By the end of the: century the barrooms were. their main sources of revenue. When a lad, Mr. Wm. Francisr lived across from Steele's Hotel and remembers that the ostlcr often came to his father‘s farm to pump water for the horses in his care. Dug wells were in use then, and they often went dry. built his Green Bush Inn on the north east corner, and in 1847, or possibly before that date. a second hotel was erectâ€" ed, on the north west corner. In 1857 this came in to the pos- session of Thomas Steele, and from then on was operated by him and his son John C. Steele. something of a record in this area where hotels changed ownership. management. and names with confusing frequency.
