The first blast was felt here at 11.15 an‘dt since it had rain- ed heavily a short time before, was attributed to thunder. How- ever, several short succeeding bursts shook houses and rattled windows around, and many resi- dents saw the angry red glow in the western sky, and later the awesome fireballs as flames shot hundreds of feet in the air when heavier explosions occurred.‘ Even this far away â€" ten miles; as the crow flies â€"- the rotteni egg odour denoting propane gas could be detected. 1 Charles and Howard Allen, ‘sons of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Al- }len, arrived at the scene in time Ito see a house near the ceme- ‘tery with its roof off and win- dows blown out and the people inside trying to get their chil- ;dren to safety. The boy‘s helped ‘them to the shelter of the cem- etery vaulrt, but shortly after the roof was blown off this structure as well, and the walls began to crumble. John and, Gordon Brumwell, both pipeline employees, feared the gas pipeline which lies just north of 18th Avenue had ex-i ploded, and they were ready for action. Many local residents tried to reach the scene, but were turned back. ‘ Allen Snider was driving in the vicinity of the blast, and had reached the point on the Maple Road where the cemetery is situated, when the first one occurred. At least one municipality in York County is not satisfied with a recent cash settlement paid them by Metropolitan To- ronto. Under the terms of the Met- ro Act, York lost 93 per cent of its assessment but assumed res- ponsibility for 43 per cent of its roads. The settlement was to com- pensate the county for its loss of assessment and increased responsibility for roads.
