But to the modern 0 gardener, there _is a feast of beauty in the new varieties and us hybrids, which have along range 0: color and size along with new q vitality. In England the clemat- is is second only to the rose in popularity - it is sometimes called withy‘wind, sweet autumn .___ and old man's beard. We shall never forget the breathtaking sight of the Clematis exhibit when we visited the Chelsea ' Flower Show in London in 19- 58. The range of color an" size of flowers was amazing. Of course many 01:: the war; ies shown thrive in the English cli. mate, but are not sufficiently hardy for Canadian winters. l The Clematis has been called the Queen of Climbers. No doubt one reason for this queen- ship is that there are few plants that are so graceful or colorful. The large flowering hybrids pro- duce masses of bloom, many up to seven or eight inches across. The color harmonies are most attractive; mauve pink with brown stamens, lavender blue with white stamens. and white with stamens of a bluish shade. Clematis has never been sub- jected to the vagaries or whims ‘of style. To gardeners of an older generation, the purple flowers of Clematis jackmani Several members of the Cath- olic Women's League in Rich- mond Hill are expected to take the course. Other invitations have been sent out to municipal ofiiclals in the southern part of the county. ' Research Campus Being Considered For Unionville Unionville may get Canada's first industrial pesearoh camp- us. The establishment of such a campus has been proposed by J. S. Grant of Tandem Invest- menus. It is hoped the campus would attract related industries, pos- sibly in the medical or pharma- ceutical fields, to locate in the eight industrial lots planned. A series of studies on the ef- fects of nuclear weapons will begin in Newmarket next Tues- day at 8.00 pm. The studies are sponsored by York County Em- ergency Measures Organization. The proposed site is an area of 70 acres in the southâ€"east comer of the village. A research campus would be designed to combat the loss by Canada of her best research brains and dollars to the Unit- ed States, the ofi’icial said. Course To Study Weapons Effect Starts Tuesday According to Major W. F. A. Preston, co-ordinator of the or- ganization, the course is design-‘ ed for people living arid working in York County in positions of responsibility. The studiés, conducted by vol- unteers of the organization, will be limited to a total of 30 per~ sons. First part of the course will cover some of the theory of blast. heat and radiation. Part two of the cofirsé will be a look at measures that may be adopted to minimize the ef- fects of blast, heat and radia- tion. “The Liberal’. “I stressrtrlrxâ€"é word facts, because there has been a lot of misinformation on the subject." An application of those meas- ures to York County through ex- ercises will constitute the re- mainder of the course. “This course will deal with the facts regarding nuclear ex- gggslopsr," Major Preston told YOUR GARDEN QUEEN OF CLIMBERS (By Robert D. Little) well-rotted manure or compost, a small amount of lime and bone meal. The soil should be loosened to a depth of one to two feet to insure good drain- age. Plant rather deeply since roots will form on the part of the stem below the soil. Be sure to firm the soil well. Mr. and Mrs. Sid Lusher and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Palmer will celebrate their wedding anniver- saries September 17. Although Clematis like sun they prefer their roots to be cool and moist at all times. so a mulch placed over the roots is desirable during hot weather. Water freely during the first mason and every two weeks during each growing season an application of liquid manure will be a great help. After the flowers have faded they mm,v be cut back to encouaavyo new growth next year. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Curtis have as their guests this week Mr. and Mrs. A. Corps. Randy‘ and Tammy, from .Ottawa.
