Far- lmer, audiences-.1 The wise ones have bolstered themselves against the shock. have ordered their spring flow- ering bulbs and can see in the mind’s eye that same garden‘ overflowing again with colour. Every spot where soon there will be a blackened dahiia or tuberous begonia, a faded glad, a limp petunia, will next spring be taken over by hosts of daffo- dils, and tulips. Who could ask for anything more? Daffodils are the glory of the‘ early spring garden and an old favourite is King Alfred, a rich golden yellow, good for pot cul- ture too. Rembrandt is similar but has a larger bloom. Golden Harvest is also deep yellow and has a large frilled trumpet. It has always seemed to us that daffodils should be yellow but the enterprising gardener will like to try some of the new varieties which range in colour from white through yellow and orange to an almost true red. Certainly a display of pure white daffodils is an alluring sight and Mount Hood is a good variety. With its ivory perianth and long slender trumpet of ap- ricot, Mrs. R. O. Backhouse was the first colour break toward pink which has led to newer and pinker varieties. Plant your bulbs. not too deeply. 5 inches of soil over the top, with good drainage and they will bloom uninterrupted- ly for years. The earliest tulips bloom a1- ong with the daffodils. These are the species varieties. Plant Kaufmannlana under your mag- nolia tree or Scarlet Elegance under the Forsythla. Fritz Krelster is a lovely salmon pink. All of these are good in the rock garden. These small, close to the earth blossoms appear as soon as the snow is gone, open- lng so widely to the early spring sunshine that they are popular- ‘ly called Water Lily Tulips. In early April the Fosterlana Hybrids are a blaze of glory. We all know the spectacular Red Emperor and Easter Par- ade is its yellow edition. Puris- sima is often called the White Emperor and there are many others of this early hybrid. The early tulips, single and double, are next in line. The doubles, such as Peach Blossom, Scarlet Cardinal and Mynheer Van der Hoef (yellow) are good for bedding. They last longer in bloom than others and so fill in the gap until the Mendels and Triumphs come along. l The latter are mid-season, tulips, a comparatively new class resulting from crosses of single earlies with Darwlns. This has produced earlier flow- ering varieties with strong stems and a fine range of col- ours. The most widely grown of all types are the Cottage, the Dan win and the Breeder. These are all tall with sturdy stems and will give a mass of colour Two large “power packed” heating elements are thermostatically controlled. “ The top element gives fast recovery when there is a heavy demand for hot water. The lower element provides storage for fu- ture use. ‘ Low cost Rental Plan $1.70 per month plus cost of power. Let Us Discuss Our Hot Water Service With You WHEN YOU NEED IT AUTOMATICALLY RICHMOND HILL HYDRO TU. 4 - 35H HOT WATER late spring. There are too %YOUR GARDEN CAN SPRING BE FAR BEHIND? (By Flnvin liedelmeler) MINE And many in these classes to make even a partial list of favourites and you will want to make your own choice from the many ex- cellent catalogues. We might just suggest that Cottage tulips provide the best oranges and yellows. Breeders are notable for their subtle shades of bronze, gold and mahogany red.‘ in Darwlns you will find all the other shades. creamy white, shades of pink and rose, scarlet mauve and black-purple. There are many new varieties of the fascinating Parrot Tul’ ips, but none more popular than Fantasy â€" just that, a blending of pink, white and green, in its flaring and fringed petals. There is now a double Fantasy, the first double Parrot. with the same blend of colours. Karel Doorman is new, very attrac- tive in cherry-red with a golden yellow margin on the incurved \petal edges. For best efl'ect plant tulips in groups of one colour and at a depth of 5 or 6 Inches. For permanent beds and to allow the planting of annual: over them they are often set deeper, up to 10 inches with satisfactory results. Don't forget to tuck in under your shrubs a few of the tiny earliest of all bulbs. NAME . . . . . . . . . . ADDRESS ....... CITY . . . . . . . ......
