A. E. Myers 8. Philip Barth {New Lutheran Central Grouping The Synod is the geographi- cal unit of the newly-merged Lutheran Church in America, including 3.2 million of the con- tinent's 8 million Lutherans. The central district, which Pastor Myers serves as dean. extends from Fort Erie to Pet- erboro, including the metropol- itan areas of Hamilton and Tor- onto. Pastor Lloyd Wisemvan of Bethesda Lutheran Church, Un- ionville. was elected to the syn- odlcal board of parish education at the district's convention. The district was organized October 9 in Grace Lutheran Church. Oakville, by the pastors and congregations of the area. Dr. Albert W. Lotz. newly-elect- ed president of the Synod. con- vened the meeting and presided. Area congregations holding membership in the district in- clude St. Paul’s. Richmond Hill; Bethesda, Umionville; Zion, Maple; Aulgsburg, Brampton. Two local Lutherans were elected to district posi- tions at the organizing convention of the central dis- trict of the Eastern Canada Synod last week. Albert E. Myers, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Richmond Hill, was elected to a four-year term as dean of the new district. Philip Barth, owner-manager of Barth’s Cleaners, was elected to a special committee studying the locaâ€" tion of the headquarters 9f the new Sy‘nocl. Harvey Dueï¬â€˜ert was lay dele- gate to the district organizing meeting. He is manager of Brand Specialties, Ltd., Rich- mond Hill. The Eastern Canada Synod of the Lutheran Church in America was organized in early October. It is a merger of Lutheran congregations from St. John’s, Nfld., to Geraldton, Ont. There are ï¬ve districts in the new Synod: Atlantic, Eastern, Central, Western and Northern. They form administrative units of the Synod. The organizing convention of the Synod established a commit- tee to recommend a location for its headquarters. Each district Is to select a layman and a pas- tor to the committee. Following their own particu- har monthly meetings last Mon- dvay evening, the Catholic Wo- men's League and the Holy Name Society of St. Mary Im- maculate Church joined to- gether to listen to an address by Mr. Stephen Roman, a man well inn-own to the parishioners of St. Mary’s, Richmond H111. Well versed as he is in the wiles of Communism, the speaker stressed the dire re- sults which could well come about if public apathy contin- ued. From the very beginning of Communism in 1917, this system has grown because of th. attitude of people who say “it can't happen here". Follow- ing its establishment in Russia, even the nearby nations re- garded it as some distant evll ‘thing which certainly would never come into their home- lrands. But it did. Now we see it, because of apathy and con- ciliation, a world force in Eur- ope, Asia, and even this conti- nent just ninety miles from the American coast. At the proper time, when Russia is ready af- ter a few more successes in science and intrigue. the "West" could well be put into the awkward position of “being buried†or surrendering. Mr. W. J. Born in East Germany in an area that was ceded to Poland after the Great war, he and his family had their roots torn up. and they removed to Berlin. Here they ï¬rst met with those of the Watchtower Socieâ€" ty. He has‘ published three books, and these in tums have been trans- lated into many languages. Sunday evening he discussed several doctrines which he con- siders heretical. Questioned, he showed how the error concern- ing blood transfusions has arisen, growing out of certain prohibitions of the practice of drinking blood. The prohibit- ions all concern the drinking of the blood of the sacriï¬cial animal. This was widely prac- tised in pagan tribes around Israel. It had nobhing to do with human blood and of course transfusions were not a possibility medically in that dained, and became a full time cnruant of H13 NIH nfhpr mpm- era. vention favoured location of the offices in Toronto or Ottawa. It was felt that Kitchener is out of the main stream of Canadian life, and that the church is too easily identiï¬ed as Germanic by remaining in a traditionally- 3German population centre. Stemming from migrations of United Empire loyalists of north European descent 150-180 years ago, the Lutheran Church in Canada ï¬rst flourished in Nova Scotia, the St. Lawrence Valley of Ontario, the Kitchener-Water- loo area, and in Markham and} Vaughan Townships. t Lutheran Churches of Lunen- burg County. Bethesda Church, Unionviile, dates from the 18th century and is one of Uhe ï¬rst Christian congrega- tions in central‘York County. The Lutheran Church of io- day is one of Canada‘s major “native†churches. Its rate of growth in the past decade has been almost 50%. Post-war immigration of Lu» theravns from Scandinavia and north and central Europe has added a very cosmopolitan and "international" flavour to Can- adian Lutheran congregation. St. Paul's Church in Richmond Hill is comprised of Lutherans from such homelands as Fin- land, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Latvia. Estonia. Lith- uania. Rumania, Slovakia. So it is with Communism. The zeal of Com- munists flar out-paces that of l’ohe West, and so they gain Tgrou‘nd. However all ls not so black! Far from an "anti-Communist" type of thinking, the “West’s†real strength lies in the posi- tive principles of Christ: "Love God, and Love Each Manâ€. If each of us. the speaker stressed, made each other person's pro- ‘blems. hls own problems. - then the strength which thls love would engender would far out- strip that of Communism. A lively question period fol- lowed uhe talk, touching on subjects as ,co-existenice (which doesn't exist); the people be- hind the iron curtain (the best friends the West has); Kruscho‘ ev's personal responsibility for the murder of millions in the Ukraine. coupled with his smiles in the U.S.; and many other topics which surely focus- sed the attention of the listen- ers on the terrible consequen- ces of apathy towards Com- m-unism. Mr. Wm. Hamilton, president of the Holy Name Society chaired the meeting; Father McGï¬nn. pastor of St. Mary's. introduced the speaker; Mrs. Wm. Henderson, of the Cathol- ic Women's League extended the thanks of all present.
