Presidem John Lunn was in the chair. Three high- lights of the evening were: 1 Showing of colored slides taken by members; 2 A talk by one of the junior group; 3 An intriguing quiz - presented by John and Mrs. Lunn. Some of the beautiful slides shown included those taken by Ott Devltt of the blue heron, and its nest of four green eggs, 3 loon’s nest, blackbirds, and a ï¬ne picture of the rather rare cattle egret. Bob Cubit chose pictures (skilfully taken) of roses, begonias, zinnias, and other flowers, interesting to the horticul-turist as well as the naturalist. Mrs. Collins pre- sented slides of the unusual - a settlement of Eskimos pic- turing their customs and habits, a captured seal, their houses and their many dogs. One slide (showed that, as elsewhere, chil- idren in the far north cannot resist the appeal of puppies. \Another slide showed the un- ique cemetery of the Eskimos. Mrs. Peter Addison was suc- cessful in photographing, in its several stages, the life of the butterfly, as well as the Ha- vana Sparrow, and an appealing nest of baby mourning doves. Dr. Lillian Langstaï¬' had the pleasure of introducing her grandson, Rolph Davis of King, who spoke briefly. It was evi- dent that Dr. Lillian was pleasâ€" ed that her grandson was carry- ing on the family tradition of a keen interest in all things pertaining to nature. Rolph mentioned the problem of‘ hunters, suggesting that signs governing their regulations might be printed in several languages, and that there should be a tighter control of the dangerous hunter. who is liable to shoot at anything. ‘Rohph also told of a visit to Point Pelee, accompanied by several members of the staff side. The quiz had three phases, identifying birds by means of silhouettes, by slides and by sounds (their recorded songs). Juniors were asked to answer the ï¬rst ten questions of each phase and the adults the entire quiz. The results showed that the juniors know their birds, augurinIg well for the future membership of the club. First prize in the juniors was won by Billy Redelmeier with sev- enteen correct answers out of thirty. Bob Cubit captured the prize for the adults, and was rewarded with a special trophy fashioned by Bob Campbell - a plaque whereon sat an alert little owl casting a covetous eye on the remnants of a ï¬eld mouse, spiked on the end of a root. The ensemble included the trap that caught the mouse. With the assistance of presi- dent Johrn, Bob slowly unveiled the trophy accompanying the unveiling with his drin humor- ous comments, stating empha- Dr. W. Allan Ripley an? The recorded songs of the birds were beautifully clear, and included those of the whim meadowlark, ruby crowned kinglet, pileated woodpecker, fox sparrow, yellow breasted chat, and (though not in the contest) the odd croaks of the Caracara (Mexican buzzard) one of which was found at Lake Superior this year, having \struck a lighthouse in its flight. Correspondent David Barbour Henderson Ave. Phone AV. 5-5205 Woodland Public School held an impressive graduation cere- mony and banquet at the school's new auditorium October 22. Despite the pouring rain that drenched the school area that evening there were only two absentees in a class of 29. Principal Gordon Learn was delighted to receive from the departed students, a ï¬ne paint- ing to grace the halls/of the school. A much enjoyed feature of! the program saw Terry Tam-1 blyn, speaking on behalf of the graduates, comically predict the fate of his successful class- mates. The outlook he gave had three of the girls being feature dan- cers at the Latin-American Club; one fellow would own the Toronto Maple Leaf hockey or- ganization; another fellow would be the ï¬rst man to run the three minute mile and a girl would represent Canada in the world tiddly wink competitions.
