We played the old standards and modern pops with our 15 piece dance band and we were just as happy to be kept busy at all times. There was no radio, no food, nothing in the way of beverage except some lukewarm liquid suppOSedly tea simply because it was of (Con-tinned From Page 2) KINGSDALE ANIMAL HOSPITAL DR. The band music did bring a little bit of North America to the boys and this was as close as we could get to Canada by playing the One O'clock Jump, Take the A Train, Long Ago and Far Away, etc. Besides when the troops saw the ban-d they usually felt secure In themselves since what would That night we had to play a midnight service for a re- giment in the Raven-na Op- era House. It was even cold- er that evening. Most of the windows were broken and of course heat was unheard of. The cold bleak winds would cut across the huge opera stage and drive into our 'properly dressed’ bodies like sharp knives, though most of us prepared for such occasions with inner com- fort and consolation. We extend sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon McWhirter in the passing of his mother at Shelburne on Sunday. even more prepared. Our garb was normally barbaric. We had been ordered to wear what was fit to keep out cold except on special parades such as this. My un- usual attire was a pair of is- sue hip lenvgth rubber boots turned down at the knee in pirate fashion, a home made (Italian tailor) leather jer- kin built around an army greatcoat, a blue turtle neck sweater and a fur head piece on top of the heap. Needless to say I was considered quite conservative. It was usual at Christmas time (as still is) for the troops to partake at all costs of the best Yuletide feast and this season was no exception. Some big building would be set up for the feast and the officers and N.C.O.'s would serve and do the dishes. We played for quite a few in and around the Christmas time and were so busy that we forgot our own little Christ- mas dinner which strangely enough fell on Christmas Day, so it was without any thought of anything except just another meal (with tur- key?). We would take our is- sue mess tins, our tin cups and gather the fare all into the one pot then spread off to sit on some steps, or back into the cold room. where we would dine in the normal drab fashion. However, it was here that several of the ban-d boys got busy on their own (bless their busy little souls) and scrounged up some old tables from some- where, took them into one of the longer rooms, set DEPT. Some one even draped up blankets over the broken windows to keep the draught out and as if this were not enough, each member had his name writ- ten on a piece of paper as a place card to show where he was to be seated. We were happy and jelly. A strange kind of happiness brought about by the know- ledge that for a moment there was ‘Peace on Earth' though GOODWILL toward MEN was sold short. We were jolly because it took only small distractions to make you laugh. Perhaps we thought of home. the loved ones. the world we had left behind, perhaps we thought of nothing at all but the pleasure of the moment at hand. No one said Grace before meal but I know now that each and everyone of us with the knowledge of the devastation and deprivation surrounding us on that Christmas Day 1944 quietly thanked God for the food set before us and that we were being allowed to par- take of His gifts.
