We hear that Glen Turnbull. son of Cec. Turn- bull. the well-known purveyor of Carrville Rd. is now living and playing softball in North Bay. Glen used to pitch for the now defunct Richvale team and word from the north has it that young Mr. Turnbull pitch- ed a noâ€"hitter and a one-hitter this past season. And in senior B competition yet! What do they feed them up north, Cec? Whatever it is you’d better lay in a big supply because if word gets around the demand could be terriï¬c! Whether or not some of the hockey players lack the strength to hoist themSelves over the boards onto the hockey cushion isn’t quite clear. The sad fact is that some of them don’t even bother to try but proceed to dominate the pleasure rink. Come on fellas â€" how about a little fair play? You play hockey on the hockey cushion and the pleas- ure skaters will stick to their particular rink area and then nobody can beef. It may save some little boy or girl from a nasty, unnecessary injury. And the little boy or girl who might be unfortunate enough to get hurt by a hockey player could be YOUR brother or sister or the favorite child of that nice lady across the road. YOU might even be the one to do the hurting and it’s a tough thing to have on your con- science! ‘ A lot of mothers have been complaining of hock- ey games going on pleasure skating rinks. In most areas of Richmond Hill hockey cushions and pleasure rinks are located in close proximity. Pleasure rinks are set aside for those who just want to skate for the fun of it or for wee tots to learn how to skate. Not for playing hockey. Value of the town park as a recreational centre ‘ will be greatly enhanced while the public conveniences will be a boon to everyone. Traffic in the park has . increased to the point where during a normal week in the summer several thousand people will make use : of the park for one purpose or another. Many of . these people are visitors from other municipalities I who come to Richmond Hill as spectators of games. 3 Their impressions and opinions of Richmond Hill are ‘ formedvon the only part of the town that they see. i The Washrooms and change house plus a proposed face 3 lifting and refurbishing of the park will do much to I create a very favourable impression for Richmond! Hill. And if there is one thing in this world we want .1 and need to create it is a favourable impression. ‘ -â€" SPORT SPOTS â€" The change house and public rooms are not going to be any slap dash affair. This much-needed asset to our town will be not only functional but also a most attractive addition to the local architectural scene. 10 THE LIBERAL, Richmqnd Hill, Ontario, Thursday, January 8, 1963 We are thankful the 1962 administration had a change of heart once the true facts were presented. Mr. Ruttle deserves a large measure of thanks for his concise and convincing presentation. Quite often in this world decisions are made without all the facts known. This is sometimes the case because ratepay- ers are reticent about presenting all the facts to the decision-making body. Once all the details of this case were presented to the 1962 administration they reversed their original decision. They deserve bou- quets and not brickbats for having the courage to reverse their own decision. At the last meeting of the 1962 Richmond Hill Council held on December 28th, Bill Ruttle, chairman of the recreation committee and parks board member, attended the meeting and presented the pressing facts of the case to members of council. Deputy-reeve Broadhurst, who had originally been the prime mover in shelving the project, was convinced by the argu- ments put forth by Mr. Ruttle and reversed his stand on the matter. A vote was taken and the change house project is now back on the rails and will be completed in time to be of real use to the sporting fraternity. ‘ It was originally intended that the change house would be built as part of the winter works program. The intent was to call for tenders and start construc- tion as soon as possible after the New Year in order to have the building available for the heavy traffic through the summer and fall months. To squash the project until 1963 would have meant months of delay and the almost complete abandonment of plans already made by the parks board. Plans and groundwork that had taken many months to complete would have to be all gone over again. There’s absolutely nothing like a little excite- ment at the last two town council meetings of the old. year to keep you on your toes. At the second last and the last meetings of the 1962 Richmond Hill Council an important works project was cancelled and then fully reinstated at the last meeting. Talk about a shifty halfback reversing his ï¬eld. The tempest in a teapot occurred over the ques- tion of whether or not the 1962 council had the auth- ority to authorize construction of the much needed change house and public rooms in the town park. At the last meeting but one it was the opinion of Finance Chairman Tom Broadhurst that the retiring council should leave the matter over to the 1963 council. â€" SPORT SPOTS BY RON CRAINE DATED at Toronto this 26th day of December, 1962.
