You know I am quickly losing that pessi- mism concerning the fact that ‘no-one wants to come out and listen to concerts'. Believe you me. the night of the bilzaard proves be- yond all doubt that Bach generates enough heat to dispense even the coldest weather. Her Last Concert? Quite unknown to most of us at the above mentioned concert, Mrs. Norma Jack- son was appearing for the last time. A most beï¬tting ï¬nale indeed that she led both her choir and the or- chestra in the ï¬nal selection from Handel’s Messiah ‘And the Glory of the Lord’. A farewell party was given in her honor at St. Mr;thew's Church on January 23, and I’m sure that there was many a wet eye throughout and singers opportunity to develop no end. Most im- portant was the splendid turnout from the audience point of view. You know I Somehow or other this concert developed into a serious and sacred affair and without fear of too much contradiction I thought that perhaps a few more secular and such numbers would have added to the evening's fare enjoyable even though it was. There are a number of youngsters showing up at these concerts now and a number aimed right at them just once in the program might help settle them down a bit. There are so many possibilities what with sin-g- in‘g groups of this calibre being available. It's all a matter of organization and if that only one number was performed with the joint use of both groups but that is an eternal problem of ï¬nding the necessary choral music and orchestral parts in time enough for this effort. Pre- paration must sometimes be a year in advance. Mr. Ar- thur Burgin, conductor of the orchestra brought forth some choice musical presen- tations to sult the occasion and the church. In‘ the Bach‘s Sheep May Satfely Graze, the flute duet played so well together by Mr. H. Standing and J. Pollock. was another admirable sign of using the potential wealth of musicianship now becom- ing available to this orches- tra without having to look towards Toronto' for help as is the case 0. most ama- teur orchestras in and ar- ound the ‘Big City'. The strings in their performance of Mascagni‘s Intermezzo have shown themselves to be a complete unit capable of putting on an evening of string music alone. By W. Mrs. Jackson was formerly a member of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and Timothy Eaton Memori~ 31 Church Choir both at that time being led by Sir Ernest MacMillan. The well known Leaside Girls Choir was founded and led by Mrs. Jackson for many a year. So it is with sadness we ‘wish her goodbye for now. You notice that I said for now. Old soldiers never die and musicians never, never retire or quit. so we look forward to the Spring and better roads from Mount Albert and Mrs. Norma Jackson hustling about again in some form of musical activity. 0f Entertainment and All That Jan Prior to 1946 there was not licensing act covering real e tate agents.
