He also took part in several panel dis- cussions. The annual three-day con- vention is attended by munici- palities from all over Ontario. (By Miss Etelka Bubik. local teacher of classical ballet) Ballet is an art, where text, music and movements have to form a complete unity. Ballet is based on very old traditions. We ï¬nd the ï¬rst trace of today‘s ballet in It- aly during the renaissance period, when the theatrical plays included a well plan- ned systematic dance call- ed “balloâ€. These dances became more independent in France, but they were still used only with songs and words. Baltasarino Belgio- joso. the dance master of Kathleen Medici, wife of Henry 11, King of France, was one of the first to cultivate and organize these dance performances and it was at this time this mixed theat- rical form began to be called "ballet". Newmarket Deputy-reeve Car- oline Ion spoke strongly against the amendment. She said a major expenditure of over $200,000 should benefit all the county. Criticislng the bid as “an eleventh hour request" North Gwillimbury Reeve Joe Dales said even if the county prov- ided its share it had no guar- antee the Toronto and York Roads Commission would as- sume responsibility for the road. “We should go along with the special roads advisory commit- tee who recommended that only maintenance be done on Bay- vlew this year." Mr. Dales said. At this point the leading roles were danced by mem- bers of the royal family and their friends. Professional ballet dancers came only later into existence. Reeve Albert Rutherford and Deputy-reeve J. Bryson of Vau- ghan Township. both told coun- cil that if Bayview is paved Bathurst Street should be also. Mr. Bryson was successful in having a motion passed asking the county to consider paving Bathurst Street. They sang, “Hap- ;py birthday" and passed a rib- bon around the circle tying a knot when the ends met. This was to encompass all Brownies all over the world, then they repeated the Brownie promise. To close their part of the cere- mony the Brownies laid a circle ‘of pennies around the globe. These pennies go to the world friendship fund. on maintenance was money thrown away. Mr. Perkins said the commission had taken a new look at the situation foilowing their earlier de- cision and he was of the opinion the commission would assume responsibil- ity for the road if the county provided their share of the paving cost. Development of ballet was somewhat ob- structed by the old fashioned views of the court and the academy. Performers were dancing in heavy baroque costumes. tight corsets. wigs and masks. This concealed the beauty of movements‘and made expressions by move- ments impossible. The net proceeds for the ev- ening were $178.00. On Wednesday afternoon the United Church Women met with Mrs. Richard Frisby in the chair and leading in the Worship period with Mrs. Jack Mackness assisting. Mrs. Binnington and Mrs. H. It was noted that Dr. Helen Kim is the re- cipient of the Upper Room ci- tation for this year. Another Korean Mrs. David Chung did the writing for the Day of Prayer service, March lst. Mrs. ‘Hornby, lst Lieut. of the Guides gave a short narration of what Thinking Day, stands for and how the unseen chain of our Guide promise binds the international family together. At this point the Brownies joined the horseshoe. by gestures and facial ex- pressions. Noverre prepared the way for ballet as we know it now. Noverre was followed by Dauberval (1742-1806) In France and by Lepicque (1748-1806) and Didelot (1767-1836) in Russia. In Italy Angiolini (1723- 1796). Gioia (1764-1826) and especially Vigano (1769-1821) helped ballet to reach its new form. Vigano organized whole evening ballet performances. He wrote music to his own choreography and the first ballet performance of Othel- lo is also connected with his name. In his compositions we can already ï¬nd the trace of romantic ballet. As one Guide came up to light a candle another Guide would repeat a Guide law from that country. When all the can- dles were alight and the 10 Guide laws said, Mrs. VHornby read the following words to close this part of the ceremo- ny. “These are our laws. We try hard to keep them so the spir- it of Guiding may bring light into the world, as our candles bring light into this room.
