The advertising concept orig- inated by the Richmond Hill and district blood donor group may well be regarded as anoth- er one of those cases where necessity is the mother of in- vention. On a recent occasion when the group wished to dis- play advertising posters ~ much in the same manner that is done‘ by politicians â€"â€" they learned that such a practice was prohib- ited by bylaws. Not dismayed they set their collective heads to thinking under the direction of Bill Hamilton, chairman of the Richmond Hill group and Ed Butlln. president, and came to the conclusion that if there were bylaws prohibiting the display of posters in public places then the only other alter- Phone: 884-7851 or 285-5782 Herbert and Joan Goodhoofd 63 YONGE STREET N. Apart from Mikado there seems to be an ex- cellent choice of musical concerts again this season. See where Shakespeare's Timon of Athens will be presented to music arranged by Duke Ellington. No ma- dam, Duke Ellington is not related to Prince Phillip. (Continued From Page 2) Reservations for Sea-Air Tours and Cruises Did you known that we In Canada imported from U.S.A. last year some 4 mil- lion dollars worth of electric and electronic organs? Did you know that? Bet you didn’t. Did you get yours? Sir Ernest MacMillan has written a very nice article in one of the weekend pa- pers all about the national anthems of Canada. It's worth reading. They say that Ron Stewart of the Ma‘ pie Leafs just a while ago before practice, stood alone on the ice in the empty ar- ena and sang 0 Canada. That's patriotism for you. Maybe he thought Punch Imlach was going to send him to Bostou. (That’ll be the day). Overheard on a radio discussion. "What Is Folk Music?" "Well. folk music is the music of the people”. Never thought the people cared that much. Chatting with Warren Mould a while ago and he was feeling very low about piano music in education as it is at the moment. Hopes that this type of music for children doesn’t become too overloaded with gimmick and ‘tricky’ type things and in doing so tend to get away from the real purpose of music. Warren is vice-presi- dent of the Ontario Music Teachers’ Association and has just completed six new pieces for piano. Publication time expected in a month. KINGSDALE ANIMAL HOSPITAL DR. CARL HEDER TEMPLE 3.54411 THE MUSIC BOX GLOBE Travel Service 285-4807 - 285-4808 MARIA'S Veterinary Travel Richmond Hill By Ray Stephens native would be to call upon the co-operation of private citizens and ask their permission to dispiay posters on the lawns of their private homes. The response was gratifying and specially designed posters were built in such a way that they would not detract from the appearance of a home but rather lend a touch of colour to them. If you see an attractive poster appealing to you from the lawn of a private home to become a blood donor you'll know that this form of advertising was conceived by the Richmond Hill and district blood donor clinic. If there's a moral to this story it must be that. people need blood in spite of bylaws, So successful has the idea been that it ls being con- sidered for use by blood donor clinics across Ontar- lo and in all likelihood will. in due course, become an accepted means of Ip- peaiinx to blood donors ao- ross the breadth of the country. A Family Affair Noticed that in the or- chestra here in Richmond Hill there are quite a few members of the family tak- ing an interest. Joe Behind- witch on cello and sons Da- vid and Royden on violins. Les Stanley on clarinet with son. Les Jr. on the trumpet, Elsa Thompson on ‘cello with hubby Ray on violin. Arthur Burgin. ' the conduc- tor has father George in the violin section and son Brian in the trumpet section. Lin- wood Durham and daughter Kathryn play together in the violin section. Jerry Lewis was 37 years old last week. Nat King Cole now 46 and that wond- erful soul of comedy Edward Everett Horton is '15! - Im- agine. Nelson Eddy has been appearing in Toronto doing a few song stunts and he is now 62. He says that the most amazing thing about the old movies he made with Jeannette Macdonald is that where ever they have been re-run in theatre they have been completely sold out. Will he ever achiev such a romantic musical d - et again. No guns or tough kids with 'natural’ acting a- bility and no talent, no knives or dirty street scenes to win Oscar awards but just a simple romantic and fairy-like singing team. Lawrence Park Collegiate Orchestra will take a trip down to Halifax this sum- mer to play at the Canadian Music Educators annual con< vention. Money for this trip was raised by parents of the 80 students in the orchestra and also through school con- certs. What a wondertul thing it is to have such sup- port. What a wonderful thing it must be to have such a school orchestra! The Nova Chords are be- ing kept busy. Saturday night of March 16 they played at the curling club In the Hill. Will be there again on April 6th, Summit Club April 19. Phil Barnes. leader of the top rated quar- tet says that he has already had to turn down requests for local parties and club affairs, so if you haVe any ideas of booklng later on you had better call Mr. Bar- nes early at TU. 4-5317. Remember Alan Jones? ‘ Star of radio and movies. Star of Show Boat with Paul Robson and company. You all know his famous version of Donkey's Serenade - well recently we caught his son Alan Jr. making his debut on the Jackie Gleason show and his style shows one thing that he has indeed a beautiful tenor voice. full and thrilling but for the mo~ ment contents himself with the popular type of singing in order, I suppose to esta- blish himself. Frank Sina- tra's son also opened up his career a few weeks ago by singing with a big band in a hotel. Judy Gariand's dau- ghter is making records unâ€" der the name of Lisa Minel- 11. What is it this week? Old age? Or are we suddenly made aware of the trend of times. Henry Fonda is now replaced by daughter Jane. Robert Montgomery has daughter Elizabeth but when President Kennedy is re. placed by daughter Caroline then we can truly say we are being pushed aside. Finally for the younger set - stage bands. 0:- dance orchestras are rapidly tak- ing over American high school musical activities and one out of every four US. high schools have these stage bands as part of the music programme. By 1970 it is predicted that there should be one out of every two. This is for the States so you Canadian types now in the high schools will have your own children going to school before we feel the ef- fect. By that time we might have a good music pro- gramme in our own schools of Richmond Hill and I kid you not.
