This one was for the several members from Newmarket and was held in the very gracious auditorium of the Greenacres Home. The total strength of the or-( chestra now is almost 50 and for once the stage was large enough to accommodate all members at one time. Symphony Give Fine Concert Mayor Bert Kent spokel before the concert and ‘thanked the orchestra for bringing this form of entertainment and recreation to so many people and then intro- duced the narrator of the or- chestra Mr. Dennis Thatcher. Vocal soloist of the evening was Mrs. Alma Stephens of Newmarket who is also a mem- ber of the orchestra. Her ac- companist was Mrs. Beth Hart wood on the piano and in the song ‘At Dawning’ George Moseley played the violin obli- gato. For one of the vocal soâ€" los ‘Brown Bird Singing' Mr. Burgin conducted an orchestra] accompaniment. Company of Canada Orchestral n mbers on the evening’s fare ere Toccata by Frescobaldi. L'Arle s i e n n 9 Suite by Bizet, Slavonic Dan- ces by Dvorak, Schubert Un- finished Symphony and several other smaller works. Most noticeable effect of the evening was the orchestra’s performance of the Schubert Unfinished Symphony. With the full orchestra employed, this work perhaps was the first real ‘music‘ produced to date where, in the creation of an orchestra in such early stages, something more than just reading notes was attained. Although the orchestra at present is known as the Rich- mond Hill Symphony, these outside concerts are aimed to-‘ wards membership from other‘ districts and also to repay present members of the orchesw tra who come from these other‘ areas. The next concert is planned for Aurora in early May and later that month, a final con- cert in Richmond Hill. Readers may order re- prints of staff photos appearing in “The Liberal” at the newspaper office, 63 Yonge Street South, Rich- mond Hill. ’fiEfiINTs AVAILABLE 884-2692 Yk. - Scarboro Voting Mr. Moreau’s decisive lead in Markham Town- ship carried right through the whole riding as he sent Tory McGee down to defeat. LINTELS | BEAMS Another step in the ev- olution of the disappear- ance of the Union Jack from the Canadian scene was approved at the April 9 meeting of the York Cen- tral District High School Board when it was decided that the Red Ensign would be flown at all high schools in the district when present stocks of the Union Jack are depleted. The Red Ensign, official- ly the colours of the Brit- ish Merchant Marine, and for some years past the a- dopted flag of Canada, will be the flag that will be purchased in the future for all high schools in the dis- trict. The decision brings to mind the words that ap- peared on the fly-leaf page of public school readers that were in use a genera- tion ago. They were: One Flag. One Crown. One Throne. The words. as many will recall, were dis- played under a full-colour illustration of the Union Jack. The motion to adopt the Red Ensign was carried without dissent.
