Thursday, 'Aer 25, 19753†11 Surveyors Television ative manner and endeavour to} find out if this extra expense at this time would meet with the approval of council, or‘ what immediate needs face‘ council in regard to the welfare of the township. We believe the school board has this im- portant responsibility of work- ing in the closest possible man- ner with township council. Second we believe the board should meet with the teach- ers and principals of the school area and plan for the proper needs of ALL concern- ed. This would take at least two years. Third. we believe the board should meet with the secondary school board. the high school principals and French or lang- uage teachers in our secondary schools and that all their plans MUST be based on information and direction received at these meetings and be able to pres- ent a full comprehensive plan Fourth. we believe the board should find out themselves the feeling of the taxpayers and‘ what the majority of those af-‘ fected desire in this matter. It is shameful to come to realize any board would direct a home and school organization to car- ry out this important inquiry. How could any board accept any such information as the board claims it received? Fifth, we believe careful consideration should be given‘ to advice from information available from other areas where an Oral French plan is considered and how this in- formation would fit into our particular situation in Vaugh- an. We believe this board has not‘ given any indication that it has carried out even the smallest part of this method of planning for Oral French. Therefore we believe this board has no alâ€" ternative but to take the nec- essary steps to stop their mo- tion of March 14th and with- hold Oral French at this time and make it their business in this township to improve con- ditions in our schools and pro- vide better basic education for our children. v-u‘. uyubpl "nun, LULIMULIVII our children. .u. Committee Opposing Oral French in Vaughan Twp. 3“! ORAL FRENCH -â€" A STATUS SYMBOL? Dear Mr. Editor: The hundreds of people in Vaughan Township who oppose the introduction of Oral French into public schools have been called “backward, ignorant . . . .not interested in the enrich- ment of their children‘s educa- tion." True or false? False, and for many good reasons. First of all these people are not against Oral French as Over 1,800 names were sub- mitted on the petition present- ed to the board at its April 11 meeting. In this number of - “backward. ignorant," etc. people we have signatures of school principals and teachers (who work where Oral French is taught). engineers, nursed, accountants. and those in many other honourable professions and occupations. These people didn’t earn their degrees by being backward and unconcern- ed about their own educations. Does it not follow that they would wish to see their child< ren provided with a sound ed- ucation, using the “three ["5" as a strong springboard to arouse an interest in addition- al subjects? The hundreds of people in Vaughan Township who oppose the introduction of Oral French into public schools have been called “backward, ignorant . . . not interested in the enrlch-‘ ment of their children‘s educa- tion." True or false? False, and for many good reasons. First of all these people are not against Oral French as such, but against the introduc- tion of the subject at a time when there are many deficien- cies in the present school pro~ gramme, and indeed in the schools themselves. ‘ Many children are poor read- ters, poor spellers and poor speakers in one language. Why add to their frustrations by making them bilingually in- competent? Where are the school lib- raries, home economics and in- dustrial arts classes? A pupil should be taught the love of reading, cooking. sewing and other creative activities necess- ary for everyday living. \ In this science-minded world we live in, what about added facilities to enable children to explore the world around them â€"â€" classroom aquariums. terrar- iums and other projects geared iRepairs to: (Continued From Page Coaches for all Occasions Radio - Hi-Fi TV Mobile Communications Richvale Electronics Stop 22 Yonge Street AV. 5-2669 PETER B. Many of these “extras†were standard facilities in Toronto and other urban areas twenty years ago and more. Oral French was not, and still isn’t Because 94 school boards out of 5,000 in Ontario feel that this subject is a necessity. Vaughan is jumping on the bandwagon so that they may say. “We wuz foist!" For, at present, that is the only visible achievement of such a pro- gramme instituted ln this rural area. The argument heard loudest and strongest is that children will learn more easily at an earlier age, and that being taught French now will assist them in high school. Assist whom, when the Robarts plan permits almost all except those who intend to go further than high school to drop all lana guages but English? The re- maining number. who take an academic course in prepara- ition for university will be of ‘the calibre who will find ‘French as easy in grade 9 as in grade 5. Added to this is the observation that the pupils coming into high school with- out having had French are on an equal basis with those hav- ing had the subject for a year or two by the time they finish [grade 9. The letter from the Depart- ment of Education gives per- mission to the Vaughan Town- ship School Area Board to hire a qualified teacher (which has been done) to teach oral French to “those pupils whOse parents wish it" and with the “least adverse effect" to the present curriculum. Now. how “least†is least adverse? Can your child afford any adverse effect to his present work. no matter how high his marks? Yet this must be expected or else why is it mentioned? What happens? Do the “non- French" work twice as hard. do the "having-had-French†loaf a little, or yet, are the public school courses of so Ht~ He value that everything has to be re-learned? The board chairman suggest- ed that some of those signatures on our petition were also on forms agreeing with the in)- plementing of Oral French, the implication being that some people will sign anything. Until I knew the facts of the caseLI too thought, “Oral French? Why not?" Upon learning of the deplorable conditions in some of our schools, I began to have serious doubts regarding that “good idea". Oral French. Hundreds of others obviously tare expressing those same doubts and have signed their names to that effect. If the board has any conscience at all. it must consider this most sin- cere and valid protest. Yours truly, Mrs. Ruth Keffen; Phone: 884-7851 or 285-5782 Herbert 3nd Joan Goodhoofd 5Dr. W.
