Delegates to the Canada section convention expressed hope that full membership would soon be possible. {Canadian Body 1Church In America The first hurdle has now been passed. The new body's executive committee must deter- mine whether or not the next hurdle can be overcome. Membership in the Canadian Council of Churches has proved impossible due to the lack of a semi-autonomous section of the church in the dominion and two deviations from basic ecumenical principles on the part of the council. The representative principle would therefore require the legislative body of any inter- church agency to be comprised only of representatives of church bodies in ratio to their membership figures. The principles are usually called that of "representation" and that of “evangelicalism.†The Lutheran Church refuses to allow its representatives to sit in an inter-church agency on a par with persons repre- senting only themselves or at best non-church bodies (such as the Bible Society, YMCA, etc). Convenor was Dr. Franklin C. Fry. president of the Luther~ an Church in America and chairman of the World Council of Churches. The Rev. Hugh Whitteker of Bridgewater, N.S. was elected president of the Canada section. The Lutheran Church in America is one of three major North American Lutheran bodies which to- gether include about 10 per cent of.the world’s 90,000,000 Lutherans. The new body is a move towards autonomy for the Lutherans in Canada. The con- vention took immediate action seeking co-operation and joint study with all other Lutheran bodies in the dominion. Some observers cited the move as a large step towards a merger resulting in a single. autonomous Lutheran Church in Canada. However, Dr. F r y warned against a nation- alistic spirit. The Lutheran Church has been an ecumenical and interna- tional denomination. On this continent Lutherans in Canada. the United States and much of Latin America have shared the same organizations. The convention of the Canaâ€" da section also directed its executive committee to study‘ the implications of member- ship in the Canadian Council of Churches. Lutherans have been leading proponents of inter-church coâ€"operation in the World Council of Churches and the National Council of Churches in the U.S. Local Lutheran congregations offered special prayers of thanksgiving Sunday following the organization of the Canada section of the Lutheran Church in America. Lutherans from six provinces met in First Lutheran Church, Toronto, last week to found the new body. It brings together three Lutheran synods includ» ing 125,000 members in 360 congregations throughout the dominion. Birthday greetings go out to Miss Janice Winterfield. Delegates from eastern Cana- da were polled as, to their preference for the headquarters city for the Eastern Canada Synod. The synod, a member of the Canada section, includes the area east of Geraldton. Ont. Although lacking large num-bers in York County today, the‘ Lutheran church was among the pioneer faiths of the area.‘ Zion Lutheran Church, Sher-i wood. south of Maple, was; organized in 1806 and wasâ€the site of the organization of the synod over one hundred years ago Bethesda Lutheran Church in Unionville is among the oldest congregations in central York County, dating from 1794. A pioneer Lutheran church in Buttonville has disappeared in recent years. The Canada section will co- ordinate Lutheran activities in the dominion and give Cana- dian members of the LCA a common voice. It will also serve as a common planning agency for new congregations.
