She also belongs to the Univer- sity club, the Federation of Ontario Naturalists and a small Spanish group but seldom has the opportunity to attend meetings as writing and home activities keep her very busy. Loraine believes that writing is a most rewarding profession for the woman who runs a h0me. She learns while she earns, from research and from the interesting people she meets. (Continued from Page 2) Dogs†8. magazine in Philadelphia, and an article on Harry Pridham’s rural store at Elgin Mills to a Chicago magazine, Groceram. “This year." said Loraine, "I am happy to have my story. River Life among the national prize win- ning stories in the 1963 anthology Rubaboo 2, pub- lished by W. J. Gage Limited.†However Loraine does not fear competition even if homemakers in general should decide that combin- ing a literary career with home-making is just the thing and be tempted to add a typewriter in the kitchen along with all their other devices. Loraine feels that most women are too group addicted these days. They tend to conform to fit in with a mass- minded society and pattern their personal behaviour to group standards. According to Loraine's thought, the day of the free-thinking individual is declining and resentment arises against the one who does not adhere to “group thought." P.S. Literary homemakers, here is your chance to write that perfect children’s story. Manuscripts should be sent to: The Editor, Writing For Young Canada, W. J. Its chief responsibility will be to forecast the neces- sary increase in the gross nat- ional product (which is the val- ue of goods and services in the nation) each year. This means a close and continuing study of all the country‘s industrial and economic needs and the way they can best be achieved. The next step, through legis- lation. is to provide financial assistance loans to municipali- ties. This means that work will be created at the local level azd that many necessary pro- jects can be started very quick- ly in home areas. The munici- pal loan fund is to have a cap- ital of not less than $400,000.- 000 which will go far to put our economy on a sound foot- ing. The fund will be admin- istered by a board which is to be created by Parliament. Of great interest to York North’s farm areas and to all agricultural areas in Eastern Canada will be the govern- ment's measure to name a sec- ond Minister of Agriculture. Now there will be a minister responsible for western agri- culture and one for eastern agriculture. For the first time in Canadian history the vastly different farming regions of east and west will have equal attention. Also at this session of Parliao ment, 3 special committee re- lating to defense will be es- tablished. Its need was widely demonstrated by the recent campaign. CONTRIBUTORY PENSIONS WILLOWDALE : Five North York firemen were injured last week when the engine in which they Were riding skidded on wet pavement and crashed into the Hogg’s Hollow bridge abut- ment. They were treated at tBranson Hospital. Another major step is the establishment by Parliament of a new Department of Industry. which is something long need- ed in Canada. The main job of the department’s minister will be to encourage industrial de- velopment in areas of chronic unemployment. HELP FOR FARMERS While the Atlantic Develop- ment Board, with a fund of $100,000,000 will be of great- est interest in the maritime provinces, this kind of develop- ment will also haVe a major effect in helping the whole national economy. Aim of the new government under Prime Minister Pearson is to introduce legislation at this session which can be pal- ed quickly. Among other vital measures will be the new Contributory Old Age Pension scheme. I am sure there are tens of thousands in York North alone who will find this one of the most satisfying un- dertakings of any government. The legislation is now being developed and you will be hearing and reading about its details as soon as the energetic new Minister of Health and ‘Welfare. the Hon. Miss Judy LaMarsh, is able to put it be- fore parliament. GLITTERING ASSEMBLY It was a thrilling moment when the meeting of the NATO ministers was formally opened in our House of Commons chamber last. week. Ministers of 15 nations were present in a glittering assembly and Prime Minister Pearson addressed them as did our Minister of External Affairs, Hon. Paul Martin who is the host minis- ter. Among those present were Dean Rusk, the United States Secretary of State. and Robert McNamara, both of whom have many friends in Canada. The NATO meetings, being held in a specially-prepared section of one of the government build- ings, are among the most im- portant to our future of any ever held. Aside from business, Ottawa is breathtaking in the beauty of its tulip festival which Is a fitting background for the great NATO meeting. The mil- lions of brightly colored tulip bulbs Were a gift of Holland after the last war. ‘ POSTAGE FREE As your M.P.. I would like you to let me know if I can be of any assistance whatever.
