Century - Old S.S. Paper Interesting Attic Find A friend has provided us with a copy of a Sunday school publication. dated December 1865. which she found in the attic of her century-old home. The sixteen page small pam- phlet bears the title of “The Juvenile Presbyterian." a Mis- sionary Record ‘ and Sabbath Scholars‘ Newspaper of the Presbyterian Church of Canada in connection with the Church of Scotland. A woodcut of Christ with the mothers and children of Salem is surmount- ed with the words “Suffer Little Children to Come Unto‘ Me", and followed by “Out of the mouth of babes and suck- lings Thou has perfected Praise." - Matt. 21. The book-t let was printed and issued for the lay association by John Lovell. St. Nicholas Street, Montreal. and is the twelfth is- sue of the tenth volume. Reports of missionary work in India. from Calcutta. Poon- ah and Madras are included in the publication. Eight subjects were suggest- ed for discussion at the 1866 convention including: 1. The duties of Sabbath school teach- ers. and the best methods of preparing them for their work. 2. Sabbath school libraries and their management. 3. Sabbath school exercises. examinations, addresses, music. etc. 4. Punct- ual and regular attendance! how best secured? 5. How many Sabbath schools be rendered more useful and interesting? 6. Infant and Bible classes. 7. The best means of retaining the} elder scholars. 8. How to inter- est our Sabbath schools in heathen and other missions. Announcement is made of a ditrict convention to be held in Kingston at Queen Street Wesleyan Church in January 1866. The article refers to the earlier convention of Sun- day school workers held in that city which had been attended by Wm. Harrison of Richmond Hill. It was at the first convention that recognition was paid to the Rev. Wm. Black as the founder of the first Sunday school in Canada in con- nection with the Presby- terian Church in Ganano- que. Mr. Harrison hastened to point out that the Rich- mond Hill Presbyterian Church Sunday school was also started in 1811. Local teachers of Sunday schools will. we think agree. that some of these problems are no nearer solution than they were in 1866. while others have disappeared with the changing times. For in- stance it is many years since Sunday schools had active ‘ libraries. although some books may still be on the shelves in the older churches. Thornhill and District Retarded Childrens’ Association last Wed- nesday sponsored a successful tea and bake sale at the Thornhaven school attended by more than 200. Convened by Mrs. Dorothy Schell of Stouff- ville and her committee, the afternoon netted $250, to be donated to the school. The photograph pictures part of the crowd at the goodies table. Yes. Ma‘am. vex-3 I went to see this precious stream, which "never dries up.” It was a clear, sparkling riv- ulet, coming down from the high hills, not with torrent- leap and roar, but with the steady flow and soft murmur of fullness and freedom. It flowed down to the high-way side. It was within reach of every child’s little pitcher. It was enough for every empty vessel. The small birds came‘ down thither to drink. The sheep and lambs had trodden down a little path to its brink. The thirsty beasts of burden, alongthe dusty road, knew the way (as I could see by their tracks) to the stream that ‘never dries up.’ Mayor William Neal [announced Monday that appro- . . Every other brook may grow dry, but this heavenly spring never ceases to flow. The lessons taught by the booklet are as appropriate to- day as they were then, as the above article shows. Printed long before the in- vention of a type-setting ma- chine the pamphlet is as legible today as it was when originally published. and does not conâ€" tain one typographical error. It also contains reproduction of two small woodcuts and the symbol for the Presbyterian Church, the burning bush with the Latin motto “nec tamen consumeratur.” Beautifully em- bellished old English letters are used at the start of each article. Approve Bayviewl For Maintenance This does not mean that Bay- view will be paved immediately as it is unlikely any major improvements would be under- taken this year by reason of the county‘s limited road budget At present this road, which has been the subject of much criticism over the past few years, is the joint responsibility of Markham Township and the Town of Richmond Hill. These two municipalities failed last April in a try to get the county to pave Bayvlew from the Markham Road to Elgin Mills Sideroad during 1963. In its present condition Bayvlew cost Richmond Hill estimated $15,000 in maintenance costs alone during 1962 - and still is a stretch of poor road, pitted with numerous potholes from time to time. Request For Northern Hospital Shelved By York County Members Some council members didn‘t like the wording of a resolu- tion put forward by Georgina Township Reeve E. J. Norris which called for an Ontario Hospital Services Commission survey for the need for such a hospital and a special county committee to assist the com- mission in its research. Reeve Norris pointed out that with the completion of both the Newmarket and Richmond Hill county hospitals, people in the northern end of the county would still have to travel many miles for hospitaliza- tion and also in the event of a nuclear disaster, 3 hospital would be needed. County Hospital Commission Chairman J. W. Rye of Mount Albert said such a survey had already been made. Sutton Reeve William Sellers said he didn't think another committee was needed since the county’s hospital commission had done such a fine job on the two construction programs. Mr. Rye said he had been told the O.H.S.C. would con- sider hospitals in Sutton and possibly Stouffville once the two hospitals were completed. It was suggested that such a hospital would not be built for use for major surgery, and would not need to be as “elaborate” as the one at New- market.
