There is no shortage in ducks this year. Surprisingly there were a lot of people wander- ing around with shot guns over the weekend but very few of them could be called duck hunters. They could only be classified as people accompan- ied by guns. -- - in. L:_.t. Acu u] bun... ‘ Ducks were flying very high and trigger happy people with guns in the 12-16 gauge cate- gory were wasting shells in gay abandon. With ducks up at a fair altitude they stood as1 much chance of hitting a bird as they did of shooting down a B-52. But they tried. The mouth of the Holland River proved popular with some 50 would-be hunters gath- ered in a conclave. Between the noise of conversation and the wild hanging of wasted ammu- nition only two very unwary type ducks were bagged by the group. Refuse discarded in the area will cause hunting to be discontinued if the practice is allowed to continue. Game wardens even had to remind one happy soul that sea gulls were not on the card - only ducks were fair game. R.C.M.P. patrols in the area did much to control the exuberance of the happy hunters. Some hardy souls were out trolling for pike and bass. Little action was reported but fishermen report that they know the big ones are there and can be had. All they have to do is try. Those big lunker lunge are lurking in the depths ready for the really ardent fisherman. Any of the Kawartha Lakes, Georgian Bay, Bay of Quinte and the St. Lawrence River are all fair lunge territory. Average in the Kawarthas seems to run anywhere from 22 to 30 lbs. with a 54 pounder taken at Honey Harbour in Georgian Bay two years ago. A Cisco Kid, 3 Harvey Spoon, 1 red and white or a worm harness are all good lures for the wily lunge. Trolling nice and slow near weed beds in 5 to 12 feet of water should pro- duce results if the lunge is lurking in the area at all. News from the Cedar Rod and Gun Club is that arrangements have been made for advance shoots for those who cannot make the turkey shoot on October Plenty 0% Ducks Few Duck Hunters BY "’ RON CRAINE JEWELLERS ARE STARRY AGGREGATION Vern Dynes’ J eweller: softball team has hung up quite a few local records so far this season. Ray Judd has compiled a record oat strikeouts that no former Jeweller pitcher has ever approached. But there’s one record they’ve hung up in such a quiet way that it has almost slipped by unnoticed. In the hunt for the Ontario Amateur Soft- ball Association Intermediate “A” Championship the Jewellers have competed in four series to date. In each series they have eliminated the opposition in two straight games. That’s quite a record in itself, but in defeating Brampton, Chester Cleamers, Owen Sound and Peter- borough the Jewellers have yet to let their opponents score a single run! They’ve strung together eight shut-out games in a string and, if that isn’t some sort of record, it darn well ought to be! 5. A note to P.0. box 186, Cedar Rod and Gun Club.
