The large white heron-like bird is a nat- iive of Central Africa. It has ‘spi‘ead to Southern Europe and ‘Asia. It was first reported in ‘South America between 1877 13nd 1882 and by 1911 or 12 it “had reached British Guiana. ln ' 1943 it was in the West Indies and Venezuela and in 1948 it had reached Florida from which it ranged up the Atlantic coast to Maine. The first one was seen at Port Rowan in Lake ‘Erie in 1956 by G. Hutchison ' and since that time it has been observed in 36 different places in Southern Ontario. symbol u! chain saw qualily In 1962 students from DAC waterfowl research project found it nesting among green heron, night heron and great blue heron ln Luther Marsh. Mr. Devltt was able to take slides of the nests and eggs. No young were reared from this nesting. The eggs or young may have been destroyed by the herons. The same year a pair successfully reared young in Presqu’ile Provincial Park on Lake Ontario and three of the young were handed. This was the first successful record- ed nesting in Canada. No cattle egrets. so named because they usually are found in low-lying pasture fields with cattle were seen in Ontario in 1963.
