This is a story about a dog and pony who met‘by chance in Richmond Hill, didn't fall in love, but will winter together this year in Florida. Of course, there's a pos- sibility the dog will even- tually fall in love with an elephant but this comes later in the story. It began a few days ago when Canine Control Officer Jim Ryan answered a call to Richmond Heights Centre w .ere a Shetland pony by name of "Topper" was per- forming with a little circus. Topper had become over- enthusiastic and nipped a small boy who was admiring him at ton close a range. The boy was [mated for his injuries. The pony, slightly bewilder- ed by it all, was banished to the local dog pound where any self- respecting horse would hesitate to go. The sentence was a 14-day one imposed as a precaution against the possibility of Top- per having contacted rabies in his travels. He hadn't. Butch belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Mildred Snowball of 221 Elka Drive, and their child- ren. Susan, 6, Nancy, 5, Billy, 4, Michael, 2. and Douglas, 1. Mrs. Snowball explained Butch wasn’t used to being tied on a chain. Apparently some children had thrown some sticks at him and Butch’s temper became ruffled. “He was edgy and lately he had nipped some children,†Mrs. Snowball said. “He was al- ways good with the children and Michael could even put his feet right in his mouth. But the way he was. we felt it would be safer to get rid of him.†Now it was Butch’s turn to be banished to the dog pound. But his fate might not have been as happy as Topper’s. Topper’s owner, Frank Bailey of Hamilton, arriv- ed and was formally in- troduced to big Butch. The story ends on a very cheerful note. It’s true, the pony Top- per just doesn’t love dogs and probably doesn’t like them at all. Mr. Bailey owned some elephants and he had just lost his dog who used to stay with them. It seems elephants and dogs have a great affection for one an- other. Butch’s plight was explained to Mr. Dailey who decided he would need a dog to go south to Florida with him this winter to stay with the elephants. He wanted Butch. But as for Butch, he might ‘ he just the dog some lonesome elephant is looking for.
