During the summer months of 1962 he was employed by the research branch of the Department of Lands and Forests to study the red spruce around Swan Lake in Algonquin Park. An accur- ate tree census was taken in 'carefully defined plots and the ‘findings related from plot to plot, particular attention being paid to the red spruce. core samples and other measure- ments made. John’s observation was that red spruce could be used successfully for pulpwood but doesn't grow in sufficient quantities. 1926. Some of his park obser- vations were: (birds) osprey, turkey vultures, warblers, three toed woodpeckers; (animals) moose. black bears “quite a few to be shot". timber wolves, lots of beaver; bobcats and lynx are common; quite a number of martin and some fisher. To round out the meeting a showing of members’ slides was conducted by Gord MacKenzie who proved that “the members‘ photography was well past the point of being merely a record shot". This was evidenced by the excellent qualities of each picture and the enthusiasm with which each was received. ll-__I_I_ __._ h,j-I_ 3 Ralph Davis, as “Information”! spent his past summer at Queti- ico Provincial Park, the second- ‘largest provincial park in On- tario, containing about a mil- lion aches, situated on the bor- der of Ontario and Minnesota. The country is fairly flat, mak- ing travel in the park quite easy and, according to Ralph, “the best canoe country in the world." He estimated 80,-, 000 visitors to the park the year before last and believes Friday evening, October 18, trailers; 1 was no exception. John described how drainage ditches were op- ened by dynamiting and show- ed photographs of the success‘ of this method of ditching, with‘ water flowing freely in the dit- ches. Work was also done on the study of ground cover by alder to see whether or not it is beneficial as a second growth. From there he was fort» unate to be able to journey to Moose River Crossing to view the eclipse where there was 87 seconds of to- tality, during which time he saw “the most beautiful sunset ever”. During the brief darkness, John re- ports that it got quite cold, birds were silent (perhaps asleep) but came to life when the sun reappeared. Globe Travel Service 63 YONGE STREET N.
