Richmond Hill REPAIRS Neighbourhood Notes Chiisrtmas is over. but the memories are warm and linger- ing. The concert at Brown's Cor- ners Church was one night to remember when the children performed and most of the com- munity turned out to applaud. In the Christian education room there were bright decora- tions and the hum of children’s voices and the program was brimful of excitement and ex- pectancy. Mrs. Norman Reid’s junior girls opened with a Christmas greeting and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” and the be ginners' class followed with “Away in a Manger" and “Jingle Bells." There were recltations by Paul Steffler and Randy Evans and Wayne Stiver sang an im- promptu song. Gail and Kenny Jones sang too. There were piano solos by Melanie Watt and Neil Arm- strong, and the primary boys and girls under the direction of Caroline Copp and Mrs. Rob- ert Hood sang "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer". The night was crisp with sparkling frost and stars that twinkled, and there was the crunch of footsteps in the snow. The junior choir. with Mrs. George Hooper leading and Joy Fuller accompanist. sang sever- al numbers, and Garnet Stew- art’s junior boys used real bells in their “Christmas Bells" num- ber. Mrs. Wilfred Turner's class of intermediate girls turned in- to little forest animals_ that night saddened by the loss of a little fir tree. They were happy again when they found their tree surrounded by a family and decorated for Christmas. Rambling Around Mr. Armstrong’s Hl-C group including Gordon Brown. Tom Arnold. Sandra and Wayne Too- ley and Merv Gohn entertained with a skit and Mrs. Marguerite Jones sang delightfully. Throughout the programme there were carols. led by Mrs. S. J. English and Miss Joy Ful- ler, and to crown the evening came Santa Claus, with gifts for everyone. (Continued From Page 2) and you’d have to say, “Thornhill, Ontario viceversa. A train is a wonderful place to make friends with people. A tall athletic young man and his little girl had the compartment across from me. The little girl scampered about the aisle as children Who are active and curious usually do. It was only a matter of time until she came to pay me a Visit. She told me she was Christine Cahill and that her daddy was the assistant coach of the Montreal Alouettes. They were enroute to Chicago from Montreal to visit Christine’s grandmother. Sleep didn’t come easy, though I must have slept at least four hours. Then I lay awake for the longest time just listening to the sound of the great wheels rocking and rolling beneath me. And all the while as I listened to the rhythm, the great train moved steadily and relentlessly toward Chicago. As soon as the grey dawn appeared, I dressed and went to stand near the doorway to watch the farmlands and cornfields receding in the distance. As the train neared Chicago, I could see that many of the houses were substantially new and attractive but as the train moved in closer I saw the heavy smog rising above this mighty city. The houses looked older now and I could see clearly the evi- dences of poverty that were suggested by their nondescript appearances. Finally the train rolled to a stop and the pas- sengers got off. Little Christy Cahill and I (followed by her father) walked side by side down the long corridor into Durham Station. Christy’s grandmo- ther was there to meet her and we waved goodbye. I had to transfer from the Durham Station to the Union Station. I arrived at 8.10 arm. and found that I couldn’t board the California Zephyr until 3.10 p.m. Union Station in Chicago is a most interesting station. As well as being large, it is a very orderly and busy one. There were beautiful waiting rooms, and fine restaurants, drug stores, bookstands and coffee bars and clothing shops in abundance. A station is not like a train when it comes to meeting people. You don’t bother making friends. You just watch the people as they walk by... trying to guess at the status of that important looking man over there or wonder how on earth that poor slim little mother manages her brood of_ fiv_e all at once. There is a lot of enjoyment to be had in travel- ling with reasonable curiosity. It is not how far you go but how deeply you go that mines the gold of experience, and there’s no use being afraid for on a journey the world and its people belong to you and for a time at least you belong to the world. (In a later column, I’ll tell you about the wonderful trip on the California Zephyr to Salt Lake City.) Newmarkei Plaza Auditorium Thursday, Jan. 9 CORRESPONDENT: MRS. F. H. LEAF R. R. 2. AURORA: Only two of the bea- rds gown for 1963's centennial are still flourishing. Still grow- ing are the beards of Lawnence Lawaska (which resembles San- ta Claus’) and of councillor Tom Manning. Mr. Lawask says he may keep his beard until Can- ada's centennial in 1967, and Councillor Manning says he may keep his indefinitely.
