The St. John Ambulance do- nation to any community is a large one. Every year they give about 200,000 hours of their spare time to serve most com- munities. This time is their do- nation to their fellow citizens. It is spent wherever people gather and is the public's pro: tection against serious injury‘ arising from minor accidents. Well meaning people, with little or out-ot-date first aid knowledge, can do more harm than good when trying to assist the injured, but the uniformed St. John Ambulance men and women are kept up-to-date through retraining programs and annual inspections. From their service to the community at large St. John Ambulance workers receive satisfaction, the inner-glow that comes with the knowledge they have helped a fellow human being in distress. Tuesday evening at 8 pm. ihe animal first aid course of Richmond Hill St. John Ambul- ance got under way. The in- structor this year is Bob Hood who is fully qualified to give instruction in this most import- ant subject. The course will continue for eight weeks and classes will be held in the mun- icipal building. St. John instructors give classes in first aid, home nurs- ing and child care throughout Ontario so that others may help their own families. The comrldes will be pleas- ed to be informed that Lloyd Boone, our former sergeant-at- arms. is now home from the hospital. Just before Christmas Lloyd was out jumping a horse at the Aurora Hunt Club; at one of the fences it appears he and the horse started out all right, with Lloyd on top how- ever something happened and Lloyd finished on the bottom. it was quite serious. It will still be some time before Lloyd can join us at the Court, however _r..â€"-.. on“ a I feel in harmony with the words of that old and familiar hymn of inspiration: “Unto the Hills Around Do I Lift Up My Longing Eyes." It is so easy to think about God in the presence of these mountains and it is easy to think about Him when you are in the midst of a vast uncrowded space. There is just no room for cluttered thinking. Only wonder and worship. Everything seems so clean and good. Such is the power of the mountains and the valleys. The feeling that you get as you travel up the huge canyons is indescribable. You look at their steep sides with their jagged, torn and wea- therbeaten rock and stone varied here and there with the strangest of shapes and formations. You think perhaps it was here in this land that millions of years ago, mighty rivers rushed stormin through these magnificent gorges to swell the ocean. Now there is only the canyon floor and the walls to remind you of what might have been. On the ride up the Cedar Canyon yesterday, we paused to look at Navajo Lake. It was frozen over but I am told that it is beautiful in the summer and that it is used for swimming. Pat and I were talking about Great Salt Lake yesterday. It is just like the Dead Sea. And it is so salty that industry extracts salt from it for commercial purposes. The lake covers more than 2,350 square miles, and the salt content is 27% compared with an Atlantic Ocean average of only {ll/3%. Rambling Around Susan isn’t worried about a future career in ballet as yet. She just wants to be her age and enjoy growing up although she did say that she wouldn’t mind becoming a ballet teacher. In the meantime Susan is content to study ballet, go to High school and take drama lessons from Mr. Clif- ton of Richmond Hill. Classical music is her favorite and she makes special trips to hear the Toronto Symphony. She attended the jazz concert on Fe. bruary 1. Susan intends to make more public ap- pearances however and will enter the Peel and Hamilton Festivals. Mr. Lawrence asked her questions but she was thrilled to be able to perform her ballet number “Schon Rosmarin" or “Pretty Rose Marie” as you would say in English. And getting back to the mountains. I can hardly express the wonder and awe I feel in the presence of the mountains and foothills of Utah. In this whole state, the mountains are your loving and constant companions along the road... and you are continually gazing ugward and not down. your legion Report: From The Journal (Continued From Page 2) Branch 875. It was most heartening to ob- serve how the members took our suggestion with regard to parking around the Court. The lot just in from Yonge on Rich- mond was well used as indeed it should be. Just remember that we are very privileged to participate in the activities of the fair town of Richmond Hill -â€"a privilege we should not abuse. By maintaining the high standard set in 1983 there is no reason why the c u tr e n t year should not surpass even our high expectations. Our quarters at Leiden Conn} were indeed honoured on mom day by the presence of the Kinettes. They avelled them- selves of our kitchen Iacflltlel to hold a most enjoyable dln- ner meeting.
