This carried on for six ‘years under the Conservative administration and no action was taken against Mr Banks to ‘stop his ruthless action The present Liberal government took a stand and 2000 seamen marched to Ottawa Mr Banks iwas disposed as president of the SIU and a public trusteeship was established by Parliament. justice and peace returned to the Great Lakes and the larg- est harvest of wheat in our his- tory was delivered. l Mr. Banks was arrested and 2. That in any major settle- ment between labor and man- agement in Canada as we have witnessed recently in the Unit- ed States, guide posts are es- tablished by the government to protect the national competitive position of the country. This was evident in the settlements agreed to by the UAW and the automobile manufacturers in Detroit. The establishment of a minimum wage of $1.25 across the country. will I am sure, bring about more unanimity be- tween the living standards of the provinces in Canada. â€" Is far greater than the value received five years ago. Bunny Stoneman, winner of a York University entrance scholarship last summer is testing her first year at York with a little we and a great deal of eagerness. Bunny is the wife of Bud Stoneman, Richmond Hill, and the mother of Howard. Debbie and Wendy. Bunny wanted more education as she had only a grade 11 standing. She was influenced in her de- cision by Ruth Bell, who at that time was attending the Ontario Teachers’ College. Mrs. Bell iq now a teacher at Thornhill Secondary School. Knowing of Bunny's ambition, she said, “Well, what’s stopping you from going back!” It was a challenge that Bunny couldn’t forget. After a. family conference, u “Before I went back to school,” said Bunny, “the children really didn't think I was as much of an authority as their teacher, but now they bring questions to me because they are sure I can answer them. I can't always, but we look things up to- gether.” Bunny says the educational standards of the entire family are raised and the children are doing better in school. The Stoneman family'is' justifiably proud of their scholarship winning mother. (Continued from Page 2) ative family. she wouldn’t have the courage to keep on. They are all very proud of her. She has won first class honours scholarships from York for tWQ successive years and she is now in her third year. When she graduates she will be a French major. Although there are always difficulties to be re- solved by the whole family, there have been geod side effects. The family are more involved with each others‘ thinking and communications are im- proved among family members. There is always something new and exciting to talk about. The children have come to know that their mother has a healthy respect for what they must go through in their own studies. They have learned better man- agement of their own affairs. Marg. too has her special benefits. She enjOys exchanging ideas and conversation with professors and getting closer to and understandint young people. There are many more opportunities to shsre experiences with others. So the family made it a project to send the wife and mother back to school. The children made cookies and sewed on their own buttons. Every- body pitched in with the housecleaning on the week- ends. Bunny admits frankly that there are some things that do not get done every day. Dusting for example is not considered as important as the wash- ing and ironing for the family. _-_D-V -nfl .- .Lulllll.’ uvuvar-uvv, it was decided that if Bunny went back to school and in time got her teacher’s certificate, it would provide a form of insurance for the family if any- thing should happen to the breadwinner. Another reason was that teaching would be the one profes- sion which would allow her to spend more time with her children. Bunny studies at every 'opportunity, keeps up her active church work two nights a week, man- ages her homg and lgges _torsch091v eyery day. Bunny says that her greatest joy comes from feeling intellectually alive. She has a better grasp of subjects whether it is preparing an essay or a Sunday school lesson. She has learned the value of a minute. “I feel that it is a crime to waste time on trivial things now,” she said. Bunny is very impressed with York and the fact that she will receive her education in a univers- ity that believes that the sciences and the human- ities together should at least, in the first year, pro- vide a broad base of education. If all goes well, Bunny. Stoneman expects to major in history and Last summer, Margaret Heron spent six won- derful weeks at Laval University taking a summer course in French. She had five hours of classes a day from 8 am. to 1 p.m. Composition, grammar. phonetics. literature and conversation were all in French. Since the six weeks course, Marg. says there was a marked improvement of her compre- hension in conversational French. It was a well planned course and there was entertainment and excursions provided to historic places in Quebec City. It was a memorable six weeks and. the court- eous and hospitable French Canadian family with whom she stayed became her firm friends. English. (Continued from Page 2) Aileen (Bunny) Stoncman convicted. He was relelsed on bail Ind fled the country. My point is this, We have corrected 3 very unpleasant situation end it is highly unlikely thtt Mr. Banks will ever return to Can- ada; if he does, he will be im- prisoned. The trustee: lnve dis- charged their difflcult task in a most creditable mnnner and while everyone may not agree. I believe that the Pearson Gov- ernment acted in l forthrizht and courageous mnnner. , Yours sincerely, And once you've tried It. we know it will be YOUR choice, loo . . . because it burns cleaner. more evenly and costs less: Order yours today.
