At Pioneer Village you will find Homer out at the grain barn dispensing wit and wisdom to the many visitors that throng the place. This grain barn is made of handhewn timber and was built by Daniel Stong in 1825. It is of Pennsylvania con- struction with two large mows and two threshing floors. The grain barn is a busy place in summer and Homer Whitmore has to talk to hundreds of school children. They pour in at the rate of 600 a day and Mr. Whitmore will tell anywhere from 30 to 100 children at a time the stories of old pioneer days and explain to them the uses of the various implements that are housed in it. The barn houses the wooden plows, wooden hari‘ows, sickles, cradles, flails and winnowing machines. Mr. Whitmore has the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. The majority of people ask him questions concerning the grain barn and about the early methods of threshing. He ex- plains all the equipment to them and traces the evolution of the threshing machine. “The first threshing machine dates back to 1850 and was drawn by horses.” he said. “This was followed by a self-driven steam threshing machine. ‘Next came the ‘oil pull’, a machine that used crude oil. This was followed by the combine which cuts the grain and threshes it." Homer Whitmore often demonstrates a primitive method of threshing by using flails. Mr. Whitmore has appeared in many photo- graphs and pictures. His picture has appeared in color in the Star Weekly. He was posed in the centre of a bevy of beautiful models. The Family Herald on their colorful front cover displayed him assisting two charming ladies of the village in mak- ing cider on the old cider making machine. Mi“. Whitmore also appeared on TV Stations CFTO in Toronto, Wingham and Buffalo, in connec- tion with Pioneer Village. He obliginglv poses for many people who bring along thei1 cameras and his reward is receiving letters and pictuies flom many parts of the world. He has on occasion acted the role of Daniel Stong at the village. According to Mr. Whitmore. Pioneer Village is getting more popular every year and there are now 16 authentic buildings in it. The closing date of the village will be November 1. “The weather will have a lot to do with the crowd we get at the village,” he remarked. Mr. Whitmore’s qualifications are good for the role he plays at Pioneer Village. He has a good memory and a gift for story telling. Pioneer Vil- lage which opened to the public five years ago has provided a special and fulfilling niche for the talents of Homer Whitmore.
